Windows Vista Purchase Incorrect

I went to Best Buy today looking to get a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. After looking around i found what i thought to be Vista 64bit, but could not find a label that said if it was 64 or 32 bit. So i looked around in the software section for an employee that worked in that department, after i had found someone i asked if he could verify for me that this was windows vista 64. As he was looking at the box to find a label another employee walked up who worked in that department and assisted him on tryin to find out, they finally told me that it was indeed a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I asked them serveral more times if they were positive and they both agree'd that it was a 64 bit copy so i took their word on it. After i purcahse it i get home and open the case to find out i just recieved a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit disc witch was found inside. Now i wasnt to upset at first due to the fact that no where on the outside of the box does it say if the copy is Vista 64 or 32 bit and planned on returning it tomorrow when the story opened. After reading up on the return policy i find out you can not return software after it has been open, but only exchange it for the same copy. So my question is, will it be possible at all to get a refund since ive only had it for one day, i was reassured multiple times by two employee's that it was what i intended to buy and since it doesnt say anything on the outside of the box as to what version it is you are getting.

Re: Windows Vista Purchase Incorrect

Hi there and welcome to the Community.

Unfortunately, we are unable to return opened software due to copyright laws. If you are in need of Home Premium 64 bit, you can contact Microsoft directly and they will provide you with the 64 bit software. You just have to use the key in your current packaging.

I have no idea why they weren't able to tell you which version it was. All they needed to do was scan it into the computer and it would've told them.

Re: Windows Vista Purchase Incorrect

The in-store employees should know that only Windows Vista Ultimate comes with 32-bit and 64-bit in the box. All other editions only come with 32-bit.

Re: Windows Vista Purchase Incorrect

Hello ctr138,

I’m sorry to hear that the store was not correct on what version of vista you were buying.

It is true that we will be unable to exchange the product.  However, I urge you to give Microsoft a call at 800-642-7676.  They should be able to assist in getting you the 64-bit version as your license key should work for both.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.
