Upgrading

About two and a half years ago, I bought a camera and an hp printer. I got about 4 years of warranty on it. About a half a year later the lense broke, so i took it back to best buy. I got a new camera and I've been using it ever since. Today, my camera's cover came off and the LCD cracked. I'm pretty sure the warranty covers cracked screens. I've been interested in buying a better camera considering my current one is pretty old and outdated. I was wondering if best buy could upgrade my camera to a camera of my choice? I currently have a nikon coolpix L11 which goes for about 200. So, if i was interested in the nikon D40, would it be possible to pay the difference for the d40 instead of getting another random camera that I may or may not want?

Re: Upgrading

When you bring your camera in under the GSBTP, it is sent out to the service center and they determine whether it's economically feasible to fix. If it is, it's fixed. If not, that's when it's junked out. At this point, your store may be willing to give you store credit instead of a product. However, this is entirely up to them. If they agree to it, you can just pay the difference for a D40.

Re: Upgrading

Hi jazehx,

The camera you purchased two and a half years ago with a Performance Service Plan (PSP) should have had two types of coverage when the lens broke after six months. The repair of your camera at that time would have been covered by your manufacturer’s warranty if the lens problem was a defect, and it would have been covered by your PSP if the lens was damaged and you had purchased Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) with your PSP. If your camera was replaced by the manufacturer’s warranty your PSP should cover your new camera, but if it was replaced by your PSP your original PSP would not cover your new camera.

If your camera is still covered by your original PSP and you have ADH coverage the repair of your LCD screen should be covered as long as the damage was caused during normal use of your camera. Your PSP is intended to repair your camera not replace it, but there are certain circumstances when your PSP would instead replace your camera. If you are approved for replacement the store would replace your camera with a comparable camera (not to exceed the original purchase price). If you wanted to upgrade to a better camera most stores will allow you to do this, but you would need to pay the difference between what a comparable camera costs and the camera you want to get.
