I saw your thread about that. I didn't answer because I'm not sure. I'm leaving it to a CC to answer it.

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

Hey kstewart79,

Repairs are rarely a fun prospect to consider, so I can certainly imagine how frustrated you must have felt to have encountered so many difficulties within such a short period of time. While I do not know why back-to-back repairs would have been necessary, I’m glad to hear that your local store was able to help you find a resolution to this issue.

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

I happen to agree with the original poster about Best Buy and their extended warranties. Three years ago I bought a $ 1,600 television as a gift for some friends. I did get the 4 year extended warranty. Once over the past three years they had to replace the bulb in the television and it was covered under the warranty. Recently, my friend went to get another bulb because the TV needs another one and Best Buy said that the warranty only covered the first bulb and none others to follow. I am so ticked off at Best Buy for doing this, and I will never purchase an expensive item like that again there.

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

The warranty isn't a scam because they only replace the bulb once.  It actually says that specifically in the terms and conditions brochure.  More food for thought, no manufacturer warranties cover bulb replacement (atleast not a single one that I've seen).  Bulbs can range from $100-600, so the plan probably paid for itself with just that one bulb.  If it needs replaced you can have one of our techs come out there (labor should be covered) and put one in COD, or just order one online somewhere.  What model TV is it?

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

It is not necessarily the fact that the warranty did not cover any additional bulbs, what the problem is, the sales associate makes it so that every thing is covered as long as you have the warranty. Simple as that, perhaps you should tell your sales associates to be honest and upfront with people, and not hide or manipulate the truth. And if someone is going to answer me, I would prefer it to be someone who does not have a personal conflict of interest, IE: Employee of Best Buy. I did not want answers in the first place, just airing and venting my disappointment at feeling like I was taken advantage of by a sales clerk who probably did not understand the warranties themselves.

Did the employee tell you everything was covered?

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

True, I am just a bit fedup with Best Buy and I guess my anger is coming out on all employees even though they had nothing specific to do with my issue, so for that I apologize. But yes, the employee told me everything was covered. If the employee said, you can only get one of this, or one of that in the next 4 years then I would not have paid for the extended warranty.

Perhaps the employee who responded to me is correct in saying that the warranty already paid for itself with that one bulb, but that is not the point. The whole idea of buying extended warranty protection is just that.

a stipulation, explicit or implied, in assurance of some particular in connection with a contract, as of sale: an express warranty of the quality of goods.

a written guarantee given to the purchaser of a new appliance, automobile, or other item by the manufacturer or dealer, usually specifying that the manufacturer will make any repairs or replace defective parts free of charge for a stated period of time.

Notice the word "Any". It does not say "Sometimes, maybe, perhaps".

But the employee assured me that everything was covered, and if anything at all went wrong with the television during the period of the warranty that it would be covered. His words, roughly. There was not mention of exemptions, exceptions, etc.

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

100% the same...

I have absolute ly the same issue kstewart79 had ... TOTALLY agree with him

I purchased a laptop from Best Buy in Colma, CA 19 months ago. HP 17”.  I also purchased the store's extended warranty for 2 years. I was told by the sales guy that if the computer will be brought for repair 3 times, I would get a brand new laptop the 4th time.  A few months later my brand new computer started giving me problems. The CD/DVD drive was not working. I took it to Geek Squad and 4 weeks later I got it back. When I brought it home, I found out that it was not repaired.  I brought it back, and they shipped it for repair again.  It came back in 4 weeks. And now I was unable to open the CD drive.  It went back for repairs again. Holidays came up and I got it back from repairs in 6 weeks!!! Finally it was fixed. Few months later it began to over heat within few hours after turning it on, and computer would shut down without notice.  And I was unable to turn it on for a few days. I brought it back, and the battery was replaced. Couple moths after I got the same issue, and here I am, at Geek Squad … The computer was shipped to repairs again. They replaced the mother board; and told me that repairs were $900. I got it for $800. Isn’t that strange? Again 4 weeks later I got it back. In 10 days I was back to Geek Squad. Now, when you hit the numbers lock, numbers would appear when I typed "ijklm" instead of the actual letters.  I was getting crazy already! I went back to Geek Squad and asked if I can get the new replacement computer. They told me that they could not give me a new computer yet. As usually they told me that there were only 2 “hardware” or whatever repairs that count as “3 times to be qualified for replacement”. They would have to ship the computer off again to be diagnosed (and it will take about 3-4 weeks); in case they decide that the computer cannot be fixed then they would issue me a store credit for the current value of my laptop. That was totally different from what they were saying when I was purchasing the warranty. I was told they will give me another laptop.  I would not say anything, the guys were nice but they were unable to do anything except sending it back for repairs again. 4 weeks later I got it back. They replaced the keyboard. Now, 2 months after that I got this overheating problem again.  It works for few days, then turns off without any notice, and looks dead for couple days. Then it turns on, and is able to work for a few days again…  I brought it to Geek Squad again. I was trying to be nice, to explain them that I use it this computer for my work, and I can not keep anything there, and I need to remember to do the backup every few hrs.  And finally from having it for 19 months it was in repairs for 22 weeks!!!!!!! Almost 6 months!!!!!!!!! And I’m not talking about those days when I was waiting for it to turn on…  This time guys in Geek Squad told me I had 3 “qualified” repairs already; I need to leave the computer in the store for a day and they will run a test on it. If “they will find something” they will give me the replacement. 2 days later (today) I called them, and they said they are still running the tests and cant’s see it turning off. They want to keep it for one more day.

I can’t explain my feelings, and have no idea what to do next. I don’t have a spare computer to use it every other month when mine is in repairs. And doesn’t it sound right that I have spent enough time going back and forth with it; and have a right to get this problem fixed already?

Now I know for sure that all these warranties are spending money nowhere, and when it comes to something serious there is nobody to deal with it and to make the decision. And everything they told you before you buy it is total bla-bla-bla.

I will never ever get the warranty from Best Buy, and will never recommend them to anybody.

Re: The extended warranty is a Scam!!

Glad to hear it has been resolved. I have not recieved simliar service to my satisfaction for my Gateway FX that I purchased from BestBuy in Jan. 09 which has been sent back several times for service repairs and one time was returned to me with a great deal of physical damange that contained several cracks to the exterior of the notebook. I have yet to hear back from BestBuy regarding my complaint.
