Ok well my warrranty is savin me from buyin a whole new Xbox 360.

Here is the story so far:

I got my 360 for Christmas of 06. Everything has worked fine with the console, and i've been careful with it as much as i could. My mom put on a two year warrranty just in case something happened to the console. For almost two years eveything has worked ok until last night (11/4/08) when I got an error message. I unplugged everything form the xbox at least five times, still didn't work. I got home from school today (11/5/08) and I called Xbox customer support, and they had me do a test. Turns out that my xbox was a defective one. Seriously two years and it's just now doing this? It's a load of crap, and they were gonna charge me 100 bucks to get it repaired. So I found out that the waranty was still in play, so we are considering it. The only problem is that they need everything from the original package back and they would send me a gift card for the same amount of the cost ($399.99). My mom bought it when it first came out. The thing is that i have a lot of stuff saved on my Hard Drive, and I don't want to give that up, it has all my xbox live accounts and stuff like that. So anybody think how i could keep my hard drive and still get money back?
Do you think they could just take the amount of a hard drive off the gift card to let me keep it? I need answers fast please the warranty is only good for about a month.

Thanks,

Alex

Re: Ok well my warrranty is savin me from buyin a whole new Xbox 360.

Hey Roushman17,

That’s an excellent question!  While we do typically require that you ship all of the contents of the original package back to us when you file a Best Buy® Product Replacement Plan (PRP) claim, you do have an option available.  Best Buy® stores currently offer a variety of gaming services - including console-to-console data transfers - which can be sought at the exact same time as an in-store PRP claim.  Details on our in-store gaming services can be found here, or can easily be obtained by speaking with Geek Squad® technician at your local store.

Hope this helps you out!

Re: Ok well my warrranty is savin me from buyin a whole new Xbox 360.

Aaron-GS,

My Xbox360 also went all crazy on me just yesterday (11/07/08) and I purchased a two-year (12/22/07)warranty from Best Buy as well, and though I read your previous reply to Roushman17, when I checked out the link to the gaming services that Best Buy offeres I saw that Best Buy charges $49.99 to perform a data transfer. My question to you is because my hardware is faulty (which is not Best Buy's fault) and is still under the protection plan would I still have to pay the data transfer fee when replacing my Xbox360? Also is it possible for me to just simply swap out my old hard drive for the new one? And finally, if we must return it with everything in the original box does that mean that the free games (Marvel Ultimate Alliance & Forza 2) have to be returned in the packaging as well?

Re: Ok well my warrranty is savin me from buyin a whole new Xbox 360.

S0UP5TA, you can buy a device and do the transfer yourself I think it only costs about $30 if you look for a good price but then you can save a backup to your PC and never have to worry about losing your data. DON'T PAY BEST BUY!!! $50 for that service, it is a rip off. PM me and I'll send you a link to the device (won't let me post it here).

Re: Ok well my warrranty is savin me from buyin a whole new Xbox 360.

Hey S0UP5TA,

Because saved game files are not considered to be part of a console’s physical hardware, neither data backup nor data transfer services are currently covered by any of Best Buy’s service or replacement plans.  This unfortunately means that you would need to pay for Best Buy® to backup the data on your Xbox 360 or to transfer it to a new console.  Additionally, whenever we process an exchange on a defective console it needs to be exchanged in its entirety (hard drive, controllers, cables, etc) – we can’t swap out individual components.  The only exception to this is if you had purchased a console bundle package that included an additional game, like the special Halo edition of the Xbox 360.  In those cases you would be able to keep the game itself, but everything else would need to be returned.

Thanks,
