Issues with Sony BRAVIA V-Series KDL-46V5100 (46" LCD)

Greetings Everyone,

I've been having issues with my Sony 46" LCD ( KDL-46V5100 (46" LCD). I read the reviews and for the most part (surprisingly now...) they were pretty darn good. We've had nothing but problems with this TV so far. We purchased it around August 16, 2009. To summarize:

Issues

 - The TV's sounds will cut in and out sporadically. Sometimes many times a day, sometimes it will be okay for a few days.

- When changing channels (usually HD to Non-HD and vice versa) the screen will go completely black but, there's some sound. We have to change the channel again (sometimes multiple times) or turn the TV off to get it working.

- Sometimes the TV will have issues turning on or, be really slow...but, this could be simply "human error" with something we're doing wrong so, I just kind of give the benefit of the doubt there.

We have the BB PSP and all that jazz. We started our repairs on January 19th via Elwin Electronics. I hate to lambaste people but, they are awful! I've had two instances in the past year where we have the BB service plan and had to use it and, both items (a laptop and tv) have been awful!! (Why do I keep buying the plans again..??)

Appointments

..so, the first appointment the technican already knows the issue via the phone call but, wanted to come out to check. He knows it's the board that needs to be replaced. He orders it and, it takes +/- 2 weeks to get the part and schedule and appointment to come out.

2nd appointment -- the technician comes out and realizes the part doesn't fit because it was the wrong part. He orders another part. Orders the part again and more times passes +/-  1 1/2 weeks or so.

3rd appointment - Technican comes out and realizes the part is broken. He didn't even verify the part was okay before he came out????? He orders another part again and, tries to "expedite" it.

4th appointment (March 5th) - The appointment is scheduled on March 5 between 9 - 3pm. He calls just before 10:00AM. to say that he doesn't have the part. Why would you schedule the appointment without having the part!?

5th Appointment  - Approximately a week ago, he comes out and finally replaces the sound board-motherboard on the TV. This DOES NOT fix the issue!!

So, I called Best Buy customer service today and basically got the reply "it's still under manufacturers warranty, let's try and repair it." Super. So, after 7 appointments (it will be one more for him to come out and one more to "fix" something) and 2+ months later I still have a TV that doesn't work right. That's -7- vacation days worth of time.... It's at the point where it's virtually more expensive for me to stay home and wait to have this fixed then to junk the TV and buy a new one! To say I'm upset is an understatement. It's nice to know after spending $ on that TV and purchasing their expensive warranty that Best Buy basically stiffs its customers whenever possible.  My wife and I are going out to buy a 27" Quad-Core iMAC this weekend and a chest freezer. Just made our decision easier as to where we're not buying this stuff. A new washer/dryer, HDTV, 2 Wii's, PS3, laptop, etc...all purchased within the past year or so from BB because I love the selection and for the most part the service. But, if this is BB practice to try and screw people where they can, their are plenty of other retailers that would love our business.

I just hope this "repair" stuff can get squared away. Anyone have issues with this TV? Suggestions?? Frustrating when customers who truly try and stay "brand" loyal to Best Buy get a red hot poke in the eye in return. Good to know. Good to know...

Re: Issues with Sony BRAVIA V-Series KDL-46V5100 (46" LCD)

Thanks for your reply. We'll see how it goes. I sent an email to the Store Manager (of whom I got to know because of store issues) and a friend of mine who works at another store put in a call to a store manager at the store we frequently shop at. This is in addition to already talking to the Service Center who..in my opinion it seems, basically said we're going to just trying to keep repairing and see what happens. With all due respect, I'm not going to wait around and schedule another 4-5+ appointments and drag this out for another 2+ months. Because, you can bet the BBB and the local attorney general will be made aware. I guess the bottom line is it's fixed or not. Either way, this weekend we need another computer (Quad-core iMAC) and a chest freezer. Whether these purchases are through BB remains to be seen, given this is only our second experience using the Black Tie/Geek Squad plans and *both* have been a nightmare. Frustrating indeed.

Re: Issues with Sony BRAVIA V-Series KDL-46V5100 (46" LCD)

Hi dagansinferno,

Your repair being not completed since 1/19/2010 is definitely too long, and I completely understand you being upset with how long this is taking to complete. I’m sure being asked to continue with the repair after this long is upsetting to say the least, and given this could involve you taking more time off of work I’m sure this is frustrating.

It sounds like you are a very good customer of ours, and I truly would hate to lose your patronage due to this repair experience. I would like to work towards getting you a working TV as soon as possible, and I am sending you a private message to start that conversation. To check your messages you should log into the forum, and then click on the letter icon in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Thanks for posting,

Thanks your help Allan in expediting the process. The local store near me contacted me and we made arrangements to take care of the TV. Thanks again.
