How can I learn about my computer's warrentee status

My dad bought me a laptop as a grad present in 2010. Now it's not working. The computer comes on but the screen won't. We've narrowed it down to the graphics card or the connection that tells the computer that the screen is opened or closed.

Anyways, I'm trying to find the best way to get it fixed, but don't know anything about the warrentee on it.

Ask your local best buy, they would be able to find any GSP plans on it. If it has a 3 year warranty, then it would be covered under that warranty, otherwise.. with a 3 year old computer, you're best looking at a new computer, as that kind of repair would entail replacing the motherboard (if it was the gpu) and that would be upwards of five to six hundred dollars.

Re: How can I learn about my computer's warrentee status

Hello drdenman-

There never is a good time for your computer to go down is there?  No matter when it happens, it’s always inconvenient.  I would be happy to see what we can do to help out.

Do you happen to remember if your father purchased the Best Buy service plan on it?  If he did, it’s possible that it may still be covered under that service plan.  Otherwise, the manufacturer warranty is likely to only have been in effect for the first year of purchase.

I can certainly look into the possibility of there being a service plan on the computer, but to do so; I will need you to send me some information via Private Message.  I will need:

  1. The phone number and/or email address your father used when he made the purchase
  2. Your father’s name

You can send me a Private Message by logging into the forum and clicking on the button across from my name on this post.  Otherwise, you can also do as AgentMassey suggested and stop into your local Best Buy store to see if they can locate a service plan as well with that information.

I look forward to hearing back from you!
