Frustrated (iPod Classic)

Okie, here's the deal. I was listening to my 80 gb iPod classic one night when it fell off my desk and onto my tile floor. It stopped working (the red x of doom). No biggie. I knew I had the product replacement warranty. I have a three year warranty, and i'm not even done with my first year. The problem is that tonight I went to go grab a book off a shelf (blindly). I had forgotten that I put it up there for "safe keeping" from my 1 year-old. So yeah, it fell on the ground once again. There is no change in the performance (not really any performance anyway), but there is now an appalling dent in the top left corner.

Am I still elligible to receive my warranty? This is really frustrating for me, someone who takes really good of his electronics.

Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Frustrated (iPod Classic)

You most likely have a service plan, not a replacement plan.

Your PSP isn't void, but if you send it in for a problem, there is a chance it could be determined to be due to physical damage because of that dent.

hmm. What makes you think that I don't have the replacement plan? I'm pretty sure I do, although I don't have the warranty anywhere near me at the moment (i'm out of the country).

Re: Frustrated (iPod Classic)

PRPs are almost always for two years. Also, I used to work in the Wireless dept. (where iPods are sold) and the iPod Classic had a 3 year PSP on it.

Re: Frustrated (iPod Classic)

the way it was explained to me when i bought the warranty is that it was two years. I said three years because the manufacturer warranty is one year itself.

do you think i'll be okay? or am I up a creek?

Re: Frustrated (iPod Classic)

Hello celestecielo,

It can be very frustrating when accidents happen.  I don’t know how many expensive (and not so expensive) belongings I’ve lost because of similar unexpected events so I wholly sympathize with your experience.

Your Performance Service Plan (PSP) for the iPod Classic is a three-year protection plan with the first year concurrent with Apple’s factory warranty (two-year Product Replacement Plans were not available for this type of iPod when you made your purchase).  The PSP covers failures due to defect, normal wear and tear, humidity, dust, internal heat, etc.  Unfortunately, any manner of physical damage to the iPod would not be covered under this plan.

You may certainly visit your local Geek Squad® counter and present your iPod Classic for service.  As your iPod has sustained damage as a result of the two drops, I have to advise you that it is likely that the repairs will not be covered.  The service center should contact you after diagnostics with available options.  If you elect not to pursue service, you are entitled to a pro rata refund of your PSP.  All you need do for the refund is visit the Customer Service counter at your local store with your purchase receipt.

I dislike being the bearer of unhappy news, but I hope this helps clarify the situation.

Sincerely,
