Checking warranty status

[ Edited ]

I was on my laptop and it suddenly shut down. I can't get it to start up completely. The screen just shows a blinking icon in the top left hand corner. It is a Toshiba Satellite (Serial No. {removed per forum guidelines}, Part No. PSC08U-06P038) I want to check my warranty status online if possible before I drive to the nearest store. Please let me know if this is possible.

Re: Checking warranty status

Wild guess...

-What happens if you remove the battery and run the laptop with no battery, but plugged into the wall?

Re: Checking warranty status

As "xl" mentioned, removing the battery and reinserting it before you reboot it should allow it to restart normally.  Often times, this can be due to overheating and/or failing harddrives.  If you have Tech Support, speak with a GeekSquad agent about running a diagnostic to learn about the root cause or what might be happening.

Re: Checking warranty status

I have tried both suggestions but still have the same problem.  I did notice that the flashing icon in the corner only appears when the battery is attached. I'm unsure if this is significant.

Re: Checking warranty status

They should be able to look up your receipt if you paid with plastic or linked it to a reward zone account. If you paid with cash, it'll be mroe difficult.

If you did pay with plastic or link it to RZ, you should be able to go into the store to get a reprint of the receipt, then, if it's covered, the store can handle the repair under the MFG warranty if you'd like.Otherwise, you can get the receipt and work directly with Toshiba if the MFG warranty is still good.

Assuming there is NO warranty: Is the computer passing by the POST screen, and freezing before the Loading Windows screen? If so, my first suggestion would be to reinstall windows using the recovery disks. This should tell you right away if it's a hardware vs. software problem. If reinstalling windows doesn't work or doesnt fix it, it's almost definitely a hardware problem.
