Canon D5100 Shutter problems

Howdy! I need to get a proof of purchase on a Canon D5100 I bought with a Best Buy card (@ Best Buy) a month or so ago. The shutter is stuck and I need to activate the Warranty.

How do I do that?

Re: Canon D5100 Shutter problems

Good luck.  I don't think Canon makes a D5100.

Re: Canon D5100 Shutter problems

Well as long as it's a Canon 5D or a Nikon D5100 and not a Canon D5100, you can bring it in to your local Best Buy/Geek Squad and they will send it out for repair.

Re: Nikon D5100 Shutter problems

As long as you don't have this Franken camera, we can help you....

To clarify, what shutter problems do you have?

  • do you have the mirror locked up in clean mode?
  • do you have the camera set to a long shutter?
  • is your aperture too small?
  • what happens if you use a different lens?  Please don't mount a Canon lens on it.

Re: Canon D5100 Shutter problems

Hi nvcexploder,

Sorry to hear your DSLR is already having problems, and it is correct that Nikon would require proof-of-purchase in order to provide service under their warranty.

I show you purchased this camera on BestBuy.com for pickup in your local Best Buy store, which means you would need to get a copy of the BestBuy.com invoice. You should have access to this invoice on the BestBuy.com account used to make the purchase.

If you didn’t make the purchase through a BestBuy.com account you would need to call 1-800BestBuy to get a copy sent to you, or I should be able to get you a copy of this invoice. Do you need me to get you a copy, or has this been taken care of.

Thanks for posting,

Re: Canon D5100 Shutter problems

Howdy folks! I apoloigize about not responding to these. I went into a Best Buy and sent it  back in to Nikon.

In response to xl:

To clarify, what shutter problems do you have?

Shutter will not open

  • do you have the mirror locked up in clean mode?

Tried this to diagnose the problem, it isn't locked in this mode.

  • do you have the camera set to a long shutter?

nope. I was shooting in aperture priority in bright light and in between two shots the shutter stuck.

  • is your aperture too small?

nope. Every setting results in a black image. The mirror drops, the shutter just doesn't open.

  • what happens if you use a different lens?  Please don't mount a Canon lens on it.

Exact same thing for any lens. I have three - 18-55, 55-300, and a 35 prime - no dice.

I know I sounded pretty stupid stating a Canon, but it's been a long month so far. I've been using SLRs as a hobby for a while (digital and non). When this happened, I took the camera to my camera shop and they confirmed that it was the shutter that was stuck. It won't open. At all. It's sent in now, so hopefully I'll get it back sometime. It's been there for two weeks.

Thanks!
