Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

[ Edited ]

I brought in my Canon 5D for water damage because my wife dropted it in the water at the shore of the lake a few weeks ago and the screens had condensation.

I purchased the extended service from Best Buy and I'd like to know if they will actually fix it or replace it or if I'm screwed.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

Does the service plan you purchased have coverage for Accidental damage? If so, you are most likely covered, but keep in mind that it does not cover full submersion.

If the plan does not have ADH coverage, unfortunately the damage will not be covered.

As to whether it will be fixed or replaced, the service center will determine that.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

I looks like your service plan does cover accidental damage. The unit is currently in repair.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

I did purchase accidental damage. So my question then is, can it be fixed or if it can't then what happens?

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

I cannot answer at this time if it can be fixed. If it cannot, a replacement may be issued. We will not know that until the repair is near completion.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

last question. Why is it that there is no notes on the service since it was assigned? It would be nice for them to say something in a week.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

The notes are stored internally at Precision Camera and then listed on the sheet you receive after the repair is complete.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

Hi dpere,

Being a photographer I can’t imagine how upset I would be if I dropped my DSLR in water, and it no longer worked. Unlike you I don’t have an extended service plan on my camera, and the manufacturer’s warranty has now expired.

I do show that you purchased a Performance Service Plan (PSP) with Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) coverage for this camera, and as long as the service center doesn’t determine that the damage is due to full immersion in water the repair should be covered.

If the service center determines that this repair is covered by your PSP, they determine that the repair wouldn’t be cost effective to continue, or they determine that your camera is un-repairable your camera should be replaced by your PSP with a comparable model camera.

The reason your service order notes aren’t very informative is that we contract our camera repairs to be done by Precision Camera Repair, and since they are a separate company that uses different systems than we do our service order system is not update by them as often as it would be if this was a repair being done in one of our service centers.

I do show that the camera was received by Precision on 9/1/2009, and it was assigned to a technician that day. I don’t show that they determined this repair wouldn’t be covered by your PSP, and I show the expected completion date for this repair is 9/12/2009. Keep in mind that this is just an estimate, and many factors could delay the repair beyond that date.

If you want my personal assistance in this matter, or have any further clarification just send me a private message. To send me a private message you should log into the forum, click on my icon, and then click on the send this user a private message link.

Re: Canon 5D - Water Damage Repair

Thank You for the detailed information. I'm just a little edgy because of the importance of the camera to me. I will be patient and wait until next week to hear back from someone or see if any notes get posted.
