Broken ASUS U46e-Bal5 Screen

Hi,

I purchased my ASUS laptop in August of 2011.  About 1 month ago (end of February 2012) I pulled my laptop out of my backpack and the screen had a slight crack in it.  I do not know if it was the pressure of the books, but I do know that I have never dropped or mishandled the computer in any way.  The crack has now slowly begun to spiderweb across the screen and now I cannot use the left side effectively.

I did not purchase any other warranties with the computer.  I am wondering what warranties came with the computer initially and if the cost would be covered for a problem such as this.  If it is not covered and the repairs would be expensive, I am wondering where I could purchase a replacement screen.  I go to a large school and know many tech savvy people who can help me if the cost is too much.

Please do not post any comments about "buying a new laptop instead" or its "a bad idea to change the screen," I have done my research and I am well informed on the pros and cons of those arguments.  The problem is that I have been unsuccessful in finding a site that will sell a screen or whether this problem would be covered by Best Buy.

Thank you for your time and for any help I may potentially recieve.

No this type of repair would not be covered. Typically, you can purchase a replacement screen online (like ebay) or from the manufacturer. The repair cost through an authorized service provider would likely be anywhere from 300-600 dollars. Buying the part online will run you around 140-170 bucks but I honestly couldn't recommend having a friend replace it unless you don't have anything to lose. I would attach it to an external lcd monitor before I would consider having it repaired anywhere besides an authorized repair place.

Re: Broken ASUS U46e-Bal5 Screen

Thank you for the fast response.  I have been attaching it to my  tv when at home, but this is just a short term fix since I need the laptop for class.  Thank you very much for telling me whether it would be covered under the warranty and the price of a replacement screen.  I will take your advice seriously in determining what to do in the future.

Thanks again!

Re: Broken ASUS U46e-Bal5 Screen

My daughter Asus had the same problem.  This is really a defective product.  The screen is not adequately supported by the metal frame and any reputable company would do a recall and replace this screen instead of charging more than the computer is worth for a replacement.  Cannot find a reasonably priced screen.  I sent it out to Laptop Geniuses in Seattle area for repair in desperation.  After a couple of weeks no response other than acknowlegement of receipt.  Called and they claim it should be done in a couple of days.  Not very reassuring, but they appeared to be legit based on research on internet.
