The Gamer Chronicles: The Good & The Bad

Post your personal stories of times when you either felt like a total Rockstar and hoped more people were watching or when something went horribly wrong and made you want to break things.

This is not a thread to talk about the games themselves but rather your experience playing them.

If we get enough, I might just have to publish a book.

The idea for this thread was sparked by reading stories on other various threads so I thought I would pull some of those stories in here to get this thing jump-started.  Sorry if I miss anyones'!

My first one for awe is the original Zelda. Getting all the way and beating Gannon (or so I thought) only for him to laugh at me and I had to do it all over again...

The accomplishment one is pretty stupid now that I think about it, but the first one that came to mind was Battle Clash for the SNES. It was one of the games that used that huge Bazooka add on the Super Scope. The last boss gave me so much trouble. I spent what felt like 20+ hours on that one boss only being able to get him down to like 70%. Finally had a good run and when he was down to 10% I started to freak out. I killed the boss a split second before a missile would have hit me. Needless to say other people weren't as excited as I was...

How about you guys you have any gaming memories that are now etched in your mind?

I'll never forget...

I think it was my 3rd playthrough of Final Fantasy 3, I got to the part of the game where you're stuck in a dream of Cyan's and have to defeat this boss to get out of it... Wrexsoul!!!! (see image).

Wrexsoul

Since I had beaten the game multiple times before, I was over-confident and entered this section of the game before I was sufficiently leveled up enough to handle the enemies.  To top it off, I had committed the ultimate RPG no-no; I was only using one save slot and therefore had no previous saves to recall back to before this part of the game.  I was eternally stuck in a virtually unbeatable section of a game, of which I had already logged countless hours.

What did I do? Give up? No...

Wrexsoul turned into my personal boss battle.  He was not just a mid-game baddie anymore; he was threatening my enjoyment of the best RPG I had ever played and laughing at my video game prowess.

I scoured my inventory to find any and all items that allowed me to avoid the random enemy encounters.  This at least got me to the fight with  Wrexsoul!!!! who was the last enemy standing between me and freedom from this nightmare, which was not just Cyan's anymore.

To make a long story short, I took it upon myself to wake up early and dedicate 20 minutes every morning before school to fighting Wrexsoul.  I couldn't try more than once per day for fear of losing my sanity.  It was no longer a challenge of skill but of playing the odds programmed into the game.  I relyed upon his attacks missing and my attacks being critical.  Every attempt played out slightly different and gave me a glimmer of hope that one of these times I would have the perfect battle in my favor, and slay the mighty Wrexsoul.

A month went by of this routine and one day, just like all of the others, I powered up the SNES, wiped the sleep from my eyes and went through the motions.  The run through the dungeon was going as I expected with minimal random enounters before getting to Wrexsoul.  The boss battle starts and everything seems to be going well as it had many times before.   And then it happened... Wrexsoul misses his attack on my last remaining character and, in utter disbelief, I choose my last death-blow-dealing attack and watch as my pixilated arch-nemesis fades away in a rather anti-climactic fashion.  I run screaming around my house and proceed to have the best day of school ever.

Moral of the story: When given the option in an RPG use multiple save slots and/or files.

Sad to admit it, but I did somthing like that. Rock Band 2 had a mode- the Ultimate Playlist, playing all the 45 plus songs in a row in one sitting. I completed it in a 10 plus hour, singing all the songs one day. Got a trophy and a clear microphone for it. Sadly you get another trophy if you don't pause it, but I failed when my controller ran out of batteries causing the game to pause and loosing out. Also running to the bathroom between songs and it paused with just a few songs to go. My throat was a little sore from it, not to mention the time wasted.

I will share a story on X-com.   So I was on the very last mission.  I am one of those people who will re-load if a person on the squad dies (don't judge me) and at the start of the mission I had a death, but I decided to play as far as I could just to see what I was in for.  So as my squad split up and started to search the rooms it became a battle of attrition.   For whatever reason the final part of the base I found was the elevator up to the big bad brain.

So I have 2 squad members left.   They are scavenging equipment and ammo from the dead members of the team.   I enter the hallway to the elevator and one member goes down from a snapshot at the end of the hall.   my last remaining guy throws his last plasma grenade and takes out the 3 aliens at the end of the hall.   I enter the elevator with my last guy and after exchanging fire with the remaining guards manage to take them down.  But I am bleeding out and I have no medical pack to heal myself.   I had 2 rounds before I was going to go unconscious.  I pull out my last boomer bazooka round and after the cutscreen fire it directly into the brain (overkill because a single pistol round would have done the same thing).

I kill the brain, blow myself up, and win the game.   best ending ever in my life, it was like making up a Hollywood movie as I played.  I went back and played it with no casualties but 20 years later I still remember the exhilaration and satisfaction of making it to the end and winning with my last shot.

best gaming memory ever

John

Re: The Gamer Chronicles: The Good & The Bad

Gosh I know that there have been so many times that I've wanted to punch a hole through my wall because of games, or beating tough bosses.

But I can't think of any specific examples!

I was almost ready to tear my hair out over DD, but then I just quit playing... for now.

I often get frustrated with cheevos, too. I'm pretty proud of my cheevos because sometimes they are hard to get or take an incredible amount of boosting. I remember for ME1, just standing and performing abilities with my non-main character, directly at the wall. Fun times.

Or glitching out Mafia II and falling through a window to get 1,000,000 points. :smileylol:

Re: The Gamer Chronicles: The Good & The Bad

My friends and I used to have annual Madden Bowls, a few weeks after the Super Bowl. Pick a team and do a tournament. Used to get a trophy and even got companies to send us stuff by contacting them. Over the years I had gotten coupons, frisbees, a bag of every potato chip a company made, lunch boxes and other promotional swag sent to us for the activites. I had a great 3 year championship run. The games were full of braging rites, insults, comebacks and blow outs. Fun stuff. I even edited music tracks for an annoucements of the coaches, who particpated. It was like my Christmas every year.
