You probably have a friend, family member, or coworker that has been given the opportunity to work remotely from home full-time with their company. With today’s technology, it’s becoming increasingly more possible for companies to provide such an opportunity. Of course, there are some things that are needed to work remotely as an integrated part of the company, and a few others that would make your tasks far easier.

ComputersThere are few positions these days that don’t require access to a computer, so this is probably the most crucial necessity of working from home. Whether a desktop or laptop would suit you best may vary by position. Of course, you would need to ensure you have any programs installed on this computer.

This is an obvious “must” for those with non-touch screen desktops; however they can come in handy for laptop users. Sometimes track pads (or even touch screens) are finicky, and can slow you down or cause you a bit more frustration than you need. Having the option of a mouse can certainly keep your pace up to make you more productive.

You may be thinking that this is also more of a “necessity” for those with desktops. However, if you have a laptop without a 10-key and do any sort of accounting or other work with numbers, you may find a lack of a 10-key to be quite frustrating.

Dedicated work phone

PhoneWhile email is of course a must on your computer, having a dedicated work phone is of course a necessity. You need to be able to contact your leadership in an emergency, and vice versa. Furthermore, this would be required to conference call into any work meetings that may be on your schedule. With the wide selection of smart phones, you would also be able to keep your email with you, in case your job is done remotely but on the go.

Privacy screen

A lot of the work we do is confidential. Whether that be customer or patient information, or a product or service that hasn’t been released, it’s imperative that this information be kept private. A privacy screen is the perfect way to do so, as it prevents anyone who isn’t looking directly at the screen from seeing what you’re up to. Note: Your boss may have access to seeing every click you make, so this won’t prevent them from catching you checking your Facebook.

Secondary monitor

Second MonitorIf you have a job that requires more than one program be open at a time, you can imagine how helpful a secondary monitor may be. While it’s certainly not a necessity, it can certainly eliminate a lot of clicking around programs to streamline your work flow.

While not a necessity, it can be nice to see your coworkers’ and leaderships’ faces once in a while. Whether this is used during a team meeting, or you and your supervisor’s reviews, it may play a key role in ensuring you are remembered as a part of the team on a more personable level.

While you may need one or all of these items, you should be sure to speak with your company in detail surrounding what else you may need, especially regarding access to programs. Furthermore, you’ll want to sort out what your company will provide for you and what you will be required to supply yourself.
