Are you an adrenaline junkie? Do you love actions sports like motocross, skateboarding, skiing, etc….? Have you ever wished you had video footage of your action adventures? If you answered yes to any of these questions you should check out the GoPro camcorders.
These camcorders are designed to shoot full HD video in the first-person while mounted to a helmet, vehicle, or surfboard. There are actually many accessory mounts provided by GoPro that allow the user to mount the camera to virtually anything.
There are basically two versions of the camcorder itself, and the main difference in the different models offered are the mounting accessories that come with the GoPro HD Hero. GoPro makes the HD Hero that shoots videos in four different resolutions up to full 1080p, and in slow motion if wanted. They also make the HD Hero 960, which for less money will shoot up to 960p video footage.
One thing that I was impressed by when looking at these camcorders is the sheer variety of accessories and replacement parts that GoPro provides. Once such accessory that caught my eye was the 3D Hero System; this system you to use two HD Hero camcorders to record 3D action footage in full 1080p.
Growing up in the beginning days of skateboarding (you know the Tony Hawk days) I will admit that I tried my hand at this sport, and failed miserably. It was fun trying, and would be priceless to re-live these experiences. If modern technology had existed back then I would definitely have loved the GoPro Helmet camcorder.
I was given the opportunity to try out one of these camcorders, and of course jumped at that chance to try out this camcorder while riding around on my scooter. I will say that the accessories that came with the GoPro HD Helmet Hero were as impressive as I thought they would be, and once I learned out to navigate the camera menus it was very simple to use.
Given the type of footage that this camera is intended to capture you really won’t be framing your shot before you start shooting; I believe this is why GoPro designed the camcorder without an LCD screen. The lack of an LCD screen was not a problem at all when capturing the footage, but I did find myself wishing I could review the footage I just captured after the fact. Don’t worry GoPro has thought of this to by offering the LCD BacPac that easily attaches to the back of the HD Hero.
This camcorder comes supplied with a waterproof housing allowing for use in the rain, or if you want underwater. Due to the fact that user error can cause water to leak into the housing their warranty does not cover water damage.
What was most impressive to me was the sheer quality of the video this little camcorder was able to capture. I have seen footage from full blown HD camcorders that pale in comparison. This is a very well thought out camcorder in a small but sturdy package, and if you’re into action sports I would say it’s a must have.
Happy shooting!
