Videus Cassetticus Recordera (Extinct?)

Between the rise in popularity of disc-based media and the emergence of on-demand video services, one might wonder if the days of traditional VCRs are numbered.  In fact, it could be argued that the introduction of internet connectable home theater equipment has hasted their demise.  But what options does that leave you with when it comes to recording your favorite TV shows or local programming?  The answer to that question is surprisingly simple: DVD recorders and digital video recorders (DVRs).

DVD recorders function much in the same way that VCRs did: simply insert a blank disc into the device and set the program timer, and then the unit records the indicated program.  Multiple programs can generally be recorded on a single disc and can be recorded over if necessary.  Most models even support a number of recording modes, each offering different levels of sound and video quality.  Once recorded, discs can be finalized for playback in standard DVD players, including those in computers and video game consoles.

On top of that, blank discs are relatively inexpensive, with multiple-disc packs available for as little as $10.

DVRs, on the other hand, rely on built-in hard drives to store recorded content.  While this means that the recorded content isn’t quite as accessible (or portable) as it would be with a DVD recorder, many more shows can be recorded before any additional action is necessary.  They also tend to take up less space than their DVD recorder counterparts because there aren’t any discs to put away!

Some DVRs, including those available with a TiVo subscription or through select cable and satellite providers, may also include customizable programming.  Not only do they remember what kind of shows you watch, but they can also make recommendations based on your viewing/recording history.  Some DVR services even feature online scheduling, allowing you to set up recording sessions from the office, at a friend’s house, or while on vacation.
