Hi,

This last weekend, I was fortunate enough to be able to help out in Best Buy’s booth at the Eco Experience building of the Minnesota State Fair. Between answering questions about our recycling program and informing fairgoers on the benefits of our trade-in program, I was able to look around at the other booths. One booth featured the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, and Nissan representatives told me about a $7,500 tax credit you can get from the U.S. Department of Energy for purchasing an electric vehicle.

While I’m not really in the market for a new vehicle, I am looking to purchase new appliances for my home. This got me wondering what kinds of rebates or tax credits are out there for energy efficient appliances. What I found out was impressive. There are rebates and tax credits for energy efficient appliances from both manufacturers and the government. I also found rebates through my local gas/electric company that are provided when a customer’s major appliances are upgraded to energy efficient models in an existing home or installed in new construction.US Department of Energy.JPG

In the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the government passed a rebate program for U.S. citizens who upgrade their appliances to energy efficient models. Each state was provided a specific amount of funds for this program, and it was left up to them to decide how to distribute these funds. This program is now closed in most states, but as of today there are still 12 states where this program is still open. To see a list of these states, you can look here on the U.S. Department of Energy’s website.

The U.S. Department of Energy also provides tax credits for all sorts of energy efficient upgrades to your home, has an abundance of information on how to cut your energy costs, and has additional information on Energy-Efficient Financing offers.

Each state provides incentives to their citizens when they make energy efficient purchasing decisions For a look at what your state offers, you can go to the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency website. I looked through what was offered in my home state of Minnesota and was impressed by the sheer number of incentives provide by the state and local governments.DSIRE.JPG

When it comes to saving money on purchasing new appliances, it is not only the government that can help cut the cost for a customer. As a retailer we are always striving to provide our customers with the best possible value for their money and try to have as many energy efficient models as possible for sale. Appliance manufacturers also provide people rebates for specific models; if you want to see what’s available from the manufacturer in your area, you can check here on BestBuy.com.Appliance Rebate Finder.JPG

Being in the market for new appliances and having limited funds available, I was very excited to see all the ways I can make these purchases more affordable. More importantly, I am excited to see how much money I will save in the long run on energy efficient appliances.
