Tablet in Motion: Welcome the BlackBerry PlayBook

by Community Connector Community Connector on 05-03-2011 04:57 PM

The PlayBook is exactly the kind of mad science that happens when a bunch of Canadians with a history of creating popular phones are let lose in a room full of tablet parts.  There’s a lot to set it apart from tablets that are already out there, so I’ll get right to the good stuff.

What’s Unique:

The iPad uses iOS and Android tablets use, of course, the Android operating system from Google, but BlackBerry decided to go their own direction.  They used an operating system from QNX, a company that has developed software to help run everything from lasers that perform eye surgery to unmanned aircraft control.  The operating system was designed to take full advantage of the PlayBook’s dual core processor so that it can run multiple apps at the same time and fly through the web like a jet.

What’s Cool:

Flash: BlackBerry has added full Flash compatibility, which means you’ll be able to watch your favorite shows on Hulu and stay addicted to your Flash games on the go.

HD Cameras: It comes with two cameras, a 3 megapixel front facing and a 5 megapixel rear facing, that can both record video in full 1080p.

HDMI and presentation mode:  The HDMI port lets you connect to your high definition television and watch your games, videos, and PowerPoints on the big screen.  Going into presentation mode lets you keep your video or PowerPoint playing uninterrupted on the television while you control it from your tablet screen, browse the web, or queue up the next thing to share.

BlackBerry Bridge:  For those of you who are already completely hooked to your BlackBerry phone, you’ll be able to connect your PlayBook to your phone by Bluetooth and access all the productivity apps you’ve come to know and love such as BlackBerry Messenger, email, and calendar.

What to look forward to:

More Apps:  In addition to having its very own set of apps available through the BlackBerry App World, the PlayBook has the ability to run Android apps too.  While there aren’t nearly as many apps available as a full Android system right now, that number will continue to grow.

4G:  Only WiFi versions are currently out, but BlackBerry has announced that they are planning 4G models for later this year.  They hope to make versions that are compatible with most major mobile carriers starting with Sprint this summer.

With BlackBerry Bridge and presentation mode, there’s a lot here to help you manage work on the go, which is what BlackBerry has always been good at, but there are plenty of features that make this a great tablet for connecting with family and enjoying the web too.  You can find it in 16, 32, and 64 GB versions at your local Best Buy ® and on our website.  Check the link below for more information and let us know if you have any questions!
