Today is that special day where geeks can let their nerdy flag fly free… Today is international Star Wars Day! For those who might not know, Star Wars Day is a fan-created holiday to celebrate the impact that the Star Wars franchise has had on the world. Based on a pun spun off from the classic line “May the force be with you”, this relatively new holiday is already a major deal in geek culture.
It might be safe to say that have been a Star Warsfan since birth. I grew up with Star Wars toys, clothes, on home video, even coloring books. Aside from Batman, Luke Skywalker was my main hero of childhood (Han Solo was cool too, but he didn’t have the light saber). When the prequelsfirst came out, I camped out for my tickets with several friends- even though we were the only campers for episodes 2 and 3.
While I am sure there are film students who might be able to describe the phenomenon that surrounds Star Wars fandom better than I can, I believe the best explanation for such strong fan loyalty is the culture that the fans themselves have created. When you get together with other Star Wars fans and just talk from the heart about this universe- it’s as if you really connect with this other person; forging real connections along the way. Some of my oldest and closest friendships were created through the mutual love of Star Wars, and I suspect this is the same for many others out there.
