On this day way back in 1939, Batman first appeared in Detective Comics issue #27. Since then, Batman has grown to be one of the most iconic super heroes in the world. Having appeared in books, movies, TV shows, and games- Batman has stood the test of time for multiple generations. With the upcoming release of Batman: Arkham Knight, what better way to celebrate the latest installment of the Batman universe? As a child of the 80’s, my first exposure to Batman came in the form of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. Naturally, I became obsessed with the Dark Knight and had to own all Batman products in almost every form. Bed sheets, pajamas, posters, toys- it all had to be some form of Batman. I owned the original Nintendo game, watched the animated series, I also had to deal with my brother who could do a spot on Joker impression. I am not afraid to admit that Batman had a significant role in my childhood, I am just glad I didn’t run off to learn the ways of the ninja in order to fight crime (though that would still be awesome).
What I like most about Batman is that he can be envisioned so many different ways. Batman can be the dark, brooding character as seen in the Dark Knight, or as a fun and wacky hero like in the Adam West series. One thing I did not expect for myself was just how strong my connection would remain over the years. Lately, I have been getting back into Batman: The Animated Series on DVD. It is quite the nostalgic trip to take revisiting a show that you used to enjoy as a child.
Whatever your feelings are towards Batman, you cannot deny that the character has had quite an impact on our culture. I don’t know about you, but I am feeling the need to get my Dark Knight fix- feel free to do so yourself by checking out the pre-order link below!
