Back to the Future

Congratulations world- we are now living in the future! In case you didn’t know- Wednesday, October 21st 2015 is Back to the Future Day. This is the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to ‘future’ and see how advanced everything is. While we do not have flying cars or Jaws 19, we have come a long way since the movie came out. Let’s see some of the things that the movie got right, and wrong about the future.

Hover boards

Probably the coolest future gadget of the movies, hover boards are still something that people would love to get their hands on. While they might not be available at large, some engineers have created hover boards that work on magnetic surfaces. Based on the science, we are probably a long way off from having fully functional hover boards- but that shouldn’t stop you from dreaming!

Tablets

Hand held computers were once thought of as a sign of the future, now everyone and their dog has a tablet. For those of us on the older side of life, we probably remember when tablets and smartphones came on the scene. Kids today probably don’t understand what an achievement it was to hold an entire computer in the palm of your hand, but I guess the abundance of availability of these devices is a sign that we are already living in the future.

Computerized Appliances

It was probably thought of as more of a joke when it was added in the movie, but we actually have computerized appliances available today. Samsung recently announced a fridge with a built in LCD screen- complete with apps like Twitter. Smart Thermostats like the Nest allow you to control the environment in your house through a Wi-Fi connection. We very well could be headed for a time where an oven could make the meal by itself.

Like with any movie about the future, we might not be able to predict everything. It is fun to see how far we have come and how much further we have to go. In the meantime, why don’t you celebrate Back to the Future day with us! Click here to pick up the trilogy today!
