1. GET SLEEP
I know it is a midnight release and I know you can’t wait to get online and chainsaw your friends in half, but try to keep some perspective. Once you get home from Best Buy, the urge to throw the disk in your Xbox and frag away will be hard to resist. The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is outstanding, the multiplayer is… well, you get the point. However, you must remember there are about a million other players out there who are feeling the same as you and can’t wait to turn you into a meat shield. In order to get the drop on them you must keep your senses sharp- this means GET SLEEP.
I recommend playing just a couple hours when you get home from the store and then go to bed; you don’t need much more than that in order to hone your skills back into shape. If you stay up past that you run the risk of getting ‘gamer brain’ and everything will turn to mush up there. When you wake up in the morning after sweet dreams of fallen foes, you will be primed and ready to mess up the morning of all the fools who stayed up all night.
2. GO TO SCHOOL/WORK
In these highly digital times, most schools and employers know when the BIG games are being released. If one were to look at productivity levels after games like Halo 3 and Portal 2 were released, it would look like the whole country got sick at the same time. Your boss knows it, your school knows it, EVERYONE will know you are playing your game.
Show up on time and look ready for action. You will impress your boss with your punctuality and dedication to your job (they’ll remember it when promotion time comes). Your teachers will all think you are really cool and good looking (and might give you a break when finals come). I know you will be missing precious game time, but that just means the gameplay will be that much sweeter when you get back home. You know the old adage, “absence just makes the heart grow fonder.”
3. KEEP A SOCIAL LIFE
No matter what they say, online multiplayer is not a substitute for real, personal interaction. Sometimes, a good game can make you lose track of the real world if you play it too long (my roommate knows to lock up his chainsaw since the release of Gears 2). Scientists call this effect, “Game Addiction” and liken it to gambling addiction. Now we all know that science is a lie they made up to make you think you’re crazy, but it does help your combat skills to take a break now and then.
Hang out with your friends, go out on a date, chase squirrels at the park- ANYTHING to get you out of the house. Heck, if you feel up to it, pretend you are playing the game in real life… just don’t use a REAL chainsaw. You will find that the world is not a burned wasteland filled with horrible monsters, but rather a beautiful place with just a few horrible monsters.
I hope this has been helpful, and informative. As always, have a nice day.
