points for elite status in 2016

[ Edited ]

I was in Best Buy on Dec 21 to make some Christmas purchases.  When we reached the counter, the cashier asked my wife for her phone number, she gave it to him, and proceeded to check her out.  During the transaction my wife handed him my Best Buy rewards card, and he said that it was rung up by her phone number.  We tried to explain to him that we do not use her rewards card, that we use mine, and he stated that is why he asked for the phone number, and that he couldn't change it.  We ended up going to customer service, because we were close to acheiving elite status and returned everything, and repurchased it on my card.  One of the items was a digital download of a game, and the teller told me that they couldn't exchange that.  We explained what, and why we were doing it, and he said that everything would be taken care of, but upon checking this morning, it show 0 points pending for that transaction. So I tried to do a missing points and it said the points were on another account.  I did end up making another purchase before the end of the year, but I believe I am about $5 short of elite status, because the cashier, wouldn't change the purchase, and didn't explain why he was asking for her phone number.  Could you check if I reached elite status and if not what can be done about the purchase that didn't show up on my account?

Thank you,

Re: points for elite status in 2016

Hello Sean,

As far as I can tell, the reasoning as to why the purchase you made on 12/21 being awarded zero points has nothing to do with the return and repurchase that was processed.  It looks like you paid for the purchase in-question with a gift card.  Any portion of a purchase that is paid for with a reward certificate or gift card would not qualify for points.  The purchase would also not count towards reaching a higher status.

It would appear to me that you should qualify for Elite status once a purchase made on 12/28 is no longer pending.  It can generally take a minimum of 20 days for an eligible purchase to reflect within a member's spending bar and up to 20 days after spending the required amount (Elite - $1,500) for a member's status to be upgraded.  As you may read in this ongoing thread, the My Best Buy™ spending bar has been temporarily taken down.

If you have any other questions about your account or if your status is not upgraded after a full 20 days, then please feel free to send me a private message and I will see what I can do to further assist.  A private message can be sent by first logging into the forum and then clicking on the blue button in my signature that is labeled "Private Message."  I hope that you enjoy the rest of your day.

The reason it was paid with a gift card was that was how the return was refunded. They put the original purchase on a gift card. So am I understanding, that because the cashier messed up, I am going to lose approximately 60 dollars in purchases?

It looks as if the original purchase is attached to your wife's My Best Buy™ account.  While a purchase cannot be transferred from one member to another, there still might be something that we can do.  I will be sending you a private message shortly which you can read by clicking on the envelope icon at the top of the page.

Best Wishes,
