What posts first? Points or Elite status

I'm a new Best Buy rewards member.  I made a purchase of at least $4500 in appliances that would put me into elite plus status.  I do see on my account that there are 20,000+ points pending.  I would really like the option to bank those points but as I am currently a "new" member, my options are only auto issue $5,$10 or $20.  My question is does the Elite status update first?  If it does then that would allow me the option to bank my points, otherwise I assume I would be issued 80 x $5 certificates?

Hello ahxiang7 - 

This is a fantastic question, especially for any new My Best Buy members that have made a substantial purchase! 

Generally your points will post at the same time as your tier status is updated. This usually causes the certificates to be issued before you may update your certificate preference. With that said, you would be issued certificates in the max amount possible for your available points in $5 increments, regardless of your preference. Your certificate preference simply determines the minimum amount of points you need before a certificate will be automatically issued.


For instance, if your preference is set to $20, and you earn $50 in points, you would be issued (1) $50 certificate, not (2) $20 certificates. The largest certificate amount we issue is $100. In your case, with 20,000+ points pending, you would have (4) $100 certificates issued. Unfortunately once certificates are issued, we are typically unable to convert them back to points, per our My Best Buy FAQ. I apologize for any disappointment that this news may cause you.
