I recently had a car sterio installed at the Wentzville MO Best Buy. Ever since then, my AM reception has been essentially non-existant. I went it today to see if they could take a look at it and the guy said no because it's a common problem and he hasnt been able to solve it for years.
First off, I have been in customer service for 20 years and that was the wrong answer. The correct answer would have been "Sure, I'd be happy to take a look at it."
Second off, I spent a lot of money on both the stereo and the installation and deserve better than to be brushed off.
FInally, that response does not give me a lot of confidence in your installer.
I want it fixed - preferably by somebody who's proficient in his job, not somebody who admits he doesnt know what he's doing.

Thanks for joining the Best Buy Community forums. I’m sorry that it is under such poor circumstances. It is always frustrating when a service you get doesn’t live up to your expectations, and it just makes it worse when you don’t get a good response when you try to get it fixed.
Based on your post, it sounds like you wouldn’t want to go back to the store where the work was originally performed, which I completely understand. The good news is that our Autotech installs come with a nationwide warranty of work. Based on our store locator, there appears to be several stores within a half hour of the store where you had your car worked on.
If you’d like, I can reach out to one of these stores and see if they are able to contact you to schedule an appointment to bring your car in and check it out. All of the stores on the list on the store locator page I provided above should have Autotechs aside from the stores marked with “Best Buy Mobile.” If you could please send me a private message using the link in my signature below letting me know which store works best for you and your preferred means of contact, I’ll see what I’m able to do.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

Depending on the radio selected, the techs response is pretty uniform across the board. Could it have been presented differently, I certainly think so, but please understand that the tuners in the radios are no longer as strong as they used to be. What I am trying to say is that if there are AM reception issues after a new radio has been installed, it is usually the radio itself that is lacking the hardware to allow AM to come in as clean as the factory radio.
This has been quite the issue over the last 5 years as more and more radios are becoming more of a device that allows you to interface outside equipment to play through your speakers. Many of the manufacturers are realizing that the "tuner" is pretty far down on the list of things that the majority of customers are caring about when they upgrade headunits. During my check-ins if I see any AM stations I make it a perogative of mine to make sure the customer realizes that the reception may not come in with any radio that doesn't have "HD Radio" capabilities. The hybrid digital radios come out of the box with the best tuners currently in the market, to allow not only CD quality FM reception, but also to allow AM to remain the same as the OEM, (or as close to as possible).
I realize that this doesn't change anything, but I feel as if there are some options for you if you are wanting to still listen to the AM bands. My personal recommendations would be to find a radio with "HD Radio Built In." These radios will cost a bit more, but the quality and best chances of getting those bands are much better than any other radio that we carry. You should still be within a time-frame where the installers should be working with you to make sure that you get exactly what you were looking for with this new radio.
Please let me know if there is anything else that I may be able to explain a little more clearly, as it is my hopes that you are able to listen to AM the same as before the installation took place. If you haven't already, please return to the Best Buy of your choice to seek the warranty work, but please know that 99% of the time the installation is not the issue, but rather the radio that was installed.
do you have a model number of the radio that was installed?

by no means am I trying to say that you didn't pay a large amount, anything over a penny is alot of money to me, and it was only my intention to provide you with a better option, and many of times that isn't more money when on sale. I said that it could be more because usually they are, but again there are a few options to explore. If you are not wanting to fill me in with the radio model number, I cannot be of further assistance. Sorry if I posted something that was off putting as that was not my intentions.
Have a great day!
