The original XBOX is no longer being sold except in the case of EA Sports which is still making Madden for the original XBOX.
Now onto the real question.
The XBOX 360 can play a good portion of original XBOX games. However, the XBOX 360 Hard Drive and an internet connection is required to download the update for backwards compatability. There is also a way to manually update this if you cannot connect your XBOX 360 to the internet.
All XBOX 360 units have the ability to save games. However... The XBOX 360 " Arcade " unit only comes with a 256mb memory unit which is good for starters, if its a christmas present, but cannot play original XBOX Games. If you are going to buy more games in the future, the hard drive can be purchased seperately.
The XBOX 360 Premium unit now comes with a 60 GB Hard Drive and free games.
The XBOX 360 Elite System comes with all the cables you could ever imagine, and has a 120gb Hard Drive.
The prices are , $199, $299 and $399
