Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

Hello, I have a question about the AX 720 that I hope someone can answer. I emailed Tritton and I'm not sure they understood what I was asking, so Ill try here. Ok, my question is this, Will I get audio through the headset if my set up is this: My X-BOX 360, my PS3 , and my Direct TV box are all hooked up to my TV via HDMI. My TV has an optical audio output, so if I hook up the AX 720's amp to my TV with the optical cable will I get the audio that is coming from that output into my headset? I'm using the Tritton AX 180's now hooked up almost exactly the same, except instead of the optical out, I'm using the red and white out that is right next to the optical out, and it works perfect. I get full audio from all 3, and the only time I have to change any cables is when I want to chat, but thats rare. I'm looking to upgrade to the 720 because I'm on my 3rd set of broken AX 180's. Ive read several reviews about the 720's and a few of them said that if your TV has an optical output that you can use that, and I hope its true. I hope this question makes sense, and thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

It will probably work since the HDMI cable carries both video and audio than the TV can output the audio through optical out.

I heard the AX180s are comfortable but breaks easily. Personally, I think Trittons, Turble Beach, etc. have mediorce sound quality. If you rarely chat, I'd just get a nice pair of headphones. You can buy a clip-on mic for chat and 5.1 audio mixer for the simulated surround sound.

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

@Rockadile: You are totally right about the AX 180's breaking, like I said Im on my 3rd set. Thankfully for the first break it was within the return period, then I made sure to buy the warranty when I got the second. Now that the 3rd has broken in the same exact place Im done with these. The problem is my heads big (wide), and because of this theres extra pressure on the plastic piece that connects to the ear piece. I had to make a custom metal bracket to fix it. What I did was take 2 pieces of flat metal and bent them into the shape and angle of the plastic that attaches the earpiece, then I electrical taped them VERY tight. So basically instead of the plastic getting the stress, the metal does. And it worked great up until now, its breaking just below the adjustable part where the plastic goes into top of the headset. I looked at the AX 720's and it seems like there alot wider and stronger in that area. But if I do get them I will be sure to buy the replacement warranty. Sucks having a big head!

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

Lol you must liked the AX180s a lot to go through that trouble. That area is exactly where the headset breaks and is poorly built, doesn't help to have a big head either. Got a big head myself I wear size 7 3/4 hats. Turtle Beaches don't fit me and I didn't like the sound quality so i'm going to buy a PC headset and wait for the steelseries xbox adapter.

The 720s are a lot more durable for sure. Some negatives would be that it's heavy, bulky and clamps your head tight but after prolong use I'm guessing the user will get use to it. Let me know how they are.

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

There is a new Logitech  headset coming for PS3 and Xbox360 you might want to check out. $150USD looks to be pretty high quality and the specs i saw compared it to the Astro A40 @ $250USD

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

Do yourself a HUGE favor and get yourself a Turtle Beach instead of YET ANOTHER crappy Tritton. Did you not already realize that Trittons are just problems on top of problems? Their durability and quality is flat-out poor and nowhere near as good as Turtle Beach.

If you have both consoles, then check out the PX21. If you want surround sound, get the DSS surround sound dongle. This is the same exact thing as an Ax720, except that the PX21 has a LOT more features and the durability is way better. Plus, the sound quality from Turtle Beach is better than Tritton.

One thing that you are probably getting sucked into is the fact that Tritton's headsets "look cool". Well, I'm sure you'd rather have a headset than actually works over the long haul, sounds better, has more features and is more comfortable, right? Tritton makes "pretty" headsets. Thats it!

You have to do more than look at the cute pictures, buddy.

If you actually  READ any of it (which you didn't), then you would know that the Logitech headset only has STEREO sound, NOT Dolby surround sound.

And btw, if you think Astro is "the best" just because they have the highest price tag, then you're just fooling yourself.

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

Update: Well I bought the AX 720 today and set it all up. And it worked just like I thought it would. My 360, PS3, and Direct TV box all play through the headset perfectly. No need to switch the optical cable like the guy at Tritton said I would. And the chat works as well on both consoles. Anyway just wanted to update this in case someone else wondering the same looks this up. Thanks again and God Bless.

Re: Question about Tritton AX 720 Dolby Digital Surround Gaming Headset

i actually think my a40s are better not becuase of price thats why i avoided them as long as i did. but after investing money in x3 x4 x31 x1 and x11 all to break except the x11(which i love) i went for something that sounds tons better and is equal (tho i say better) quality and fidelity as the turtle beach sets ive had. do you even own any of the headsets or did you just come here to flame. i came offering a simple suggestion to his headset shopping worrys you came complaining. also there hasnt even been any real specs of the logitech headset (dont go pulling specs of the g37 acting as if you were right) BLOW HARD

Too bad you decided to give them another chance...even after all those problems.  Just do yourself a favor and don't touch the mic because that thing will start to crap out before long.
