Project Natal

Oh Wow! Have you guys seen the videos for the new Xbox Project Natal? Is this going to be the Wii killer?

Total NO Controller gaming. Your body, hands, feet, head are the controller.

Voice Regongition, Facial recongintion, you can scan your own face into the game.

Wanna play a skateboard game you can scan your skateboard into the game and ride it.

Video chat, movies, games. Total body interaction with the game and no controllers.

This is going to be awesome!

Re: Project Natal

I too saw the video.

Wii/PS3 killer is more like it.

I'm curious to see how it would perform in a home environment, not a controlled video, though.

Like any motion-capture technology, the overall performance will really depend upon the ambient light conditions in the room where it is used.  Simply put, little to no light means little to no functionality.  The Wii gets around this limitation by using an infrared sensor.  Sony’s new motion sensor “wand” should, in theory, be able to work around this was well because it serves as a focal point for the camera – it’s following an actual signal instead of the visual outline of a body.

Xbox 360 Project Natal

Wii Motion Plus

PlayStation 3 Motion Controller

I’ll be curious though to see how they compare once they’re all available.

Re: Project Natal

I don't understand how Microsoft tries to play their new camera off as "revolutionary" when in fact Sony has had the same thing since PS2.  I can't see what project Natal can do that the PSeye can't.

The PS3 motion wand controller was truly impressive.  It's what the Wii wishes it could be.

Re: Project Natal

I never used the PSeye, but could it actually scan in objects like a skateboard and then use that skateboard in the game? From what I remember about the pseye it was only used for a very small handful of games. You could not play every playstation game with.

Re: Project Natal

Yeah, the PSeye thing could only be used for I think about 4-5 games.

It sounds like Project Natal will be able to be used with all games.

But it does look pretty awesome but also it'll probably be expensive.

Re: Project Natal

Remember, most of the videos you've seen are for promotional purposes and don't necessarily reflect the final product. I guess you could say the stuff you saw is the 'cool stuff' they hope to be able to do with this project. I don't think any of the hardware is 100% functional like it is in the video, and the family is all actors.

Re: Project Natal

Yeah, Project Natal does seem intense, but do you think they will actually be able to convert everygame into a "non controller" game? Also its not the intention of microsoft to completely do away with controllers because they believe they have the best gaming controller available, what they plan to do is implement the motion detection into games, along with the controller (like using the controller for shooting/functions and then actually using your own head movement to pan the screen). I just hope this doesnt end up like the Wii and they just put out a bunch of kiddy games for it. either way, im still with PS3, why put out such a large expansion for the console, when the console itself still has some of the biggest problems for major consoles to date?.
