My PS3 has recently broken and it turns out with a deal i can get one new for cheaper than it would be to fix my current one. That's all fine and dandy, but the problem is i don't want to lose all of the save games and other files that i have on my current harddrive, i also dont want to just replace the hard drive in the new ps3 with the old one since right now, my hard drive is almost full and a new one would have twice as much space. So i was wondering if it was possible to transfer the save games and other data from my current hard drive to that of a new one, and if so, is there a price to pay.

$99 for data back up under 20GB, $149 for Unlimited data backup or you can try the "Toaster" from Thermaltake (SKU:8990443 on bestbuy.com). You dock your hard drive into it and it goes USB to your computer. You can then clone all of the info from the original PS3 Hard drive onto the new one. Assuming the old drive still works.

If you don't have backups, then your old saves are gone. You can't recover the files off the old PS3's drive without that PS3 working, as Sony designed it so the drive is encrypted to each specific PS3. So you also can't just toss the drive into your new PS3.

If you're a technical person, do some googling on the symptoms your old PS3 showed before it died, maybe you can effect a short-term fix that will let you recover your saves.

Or if you're a techie you can break the encryption and re-encrypt, but it is a MASSIVE pain and expensive for the programs.

What keen said is the best way as there are lots of short term fixes for consoles that ring or code.
