WAV Files won't play on Windows Vista Home Premium

We have a HP Desktop PC running Windows Vista Home Premium.  Just recently, certian sound files quit playing.  We also noticed that the system sounds quit working as well.  After looking into it more, I figured out that the drivers are all up to date, that iTunes plays music just fine, and that the internal error beeper in the tower replaced the error.wav when an error window pops up.   I have run defragment, check disk, and other system scanners.  None of these seemed to help.  Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Re: WAV Files won't play on Windows Vista Home Premium

Have you checked the HP Website and Microsoft Support websites to see if they have any solutions to your problem? Since there could be multiple things causing this, I would check at the places I mentioned first and see if their knowledge base contains an answer.

Re: WAV Files won't play on Windows Vista Home Premium

I have checked multiple websites including the ones you mentioned.  None of them have had solutions to my I have also talked to a Geek Squad Rep at Best Buy and he told me to run Defragment and Check Disk. I did this and still nothing.  He also told me to check under the cover to make sure that none of the "caps" had burst????  I checked and nothing looked burst but I still havent figured out the problem.

Re: WAV Files won't play on Windows Vista Home Premium

so, are the .wav files unable to play with ANY program? or are you only testing playback through, say, itunes and windows media player only?

i'd recommend trying to play the files with VLC and media player classic (both free for download) to see if those work. don't know if they will, but it's worth a shot to try out.
