Looking to buy a good laptop

Greetings all, first post in this forum; bear with me.

I'm an avid gamer and I edit movies for hobby.

I havn't bought a laptop since... oh, 7 years ago, and not quite sure what to look for, brand, what I need, etc.

I know I'm not looking for something extremly fancy like Alienware, but rather something more durable and long lasting.

I do have some requirements I am looking for, benchmarks if you must.

I'm looking for a laptop that runs:

at least a 4 to 5 hour battery life

the PC Game "Crysis 2" with it's DX11 support with either the best or 2nd best graphic settings (I use this as benchmark for graphic quality also for my movie editing/ and also for it to be powerful enough to handle it's physics engine, although i am aware there are other physics engines that are equally as good or better than that of Crysis 2

a good amount of memory (i doubt this should be a problem, as i'm only looking for at least 500 Gb, and i believe, correct me if i'm wrong, that most laptops nowadays should exceed that requirement)

The lower the cost, the better, of course.

Thanks.

Re: Looking to buy a good laptop

If you read through the posts here, you'll quickly see that you are asking for something that does not exist.

A cheap laptop will not game.

A laptop that does what you want, and there are darn few of them, will be frightfully expensive and have extremely ppor battery life.

There are some with hybrid graphics, but they aren't quite ready for gaming nirvana.

You are better off getting a desktop.  You'll find a wide range that will suit your needs, and it will cost you much less than a laptop that does what you requested.

Re: Looking to buy a good laptop

Piggy backing on NNBD's post, a laptop that will be able to run Crysis2, and 4-5 hours of battery life will be, for the vast majority, mutually exclusive.

You didn't specify a budget, but I'm also inclined to recommend you look towards desktops for video editing/gaming.

Re: Looking to buy a good laptop

hmm... the thing is, i'm buying this laptop for college and need to take notes as well...

I considered a netbook, but i doubt it'd meet my editing needs and i've not enough money to buy both a new desktop and a netbook, nor do i want to bring that much hardware into a college environment.

I could consider giving up gaming capability but not so much graphical quality. Would that be possible?

Re: Looking to buy a good laptop

You could get a decent desktop and a low end netbook for the price of a gaming laptop, The desktop for gaming and video editing, and the netbook to carry to class for note taking, etc.

This answered my question, in that wanting, and being able to afford, are unfortunately going to not line up well in this case.

If you list a max budget, one of us can give you some suggestions, but, brace yourself for a big let down on what will be in your pricerange for laptops.

Re: Looking to buy a good laptop

Hmm... perhaps a laptop with at least a 2 hour battery life, and would be able to run Crysis 2 in general?

I really cannot consider bringing both a desktop and a laptop/netbook, unfortunately.

Could I get suggestions for a max budget of $1000, $1200 if need be?

(I know this is a best buy forum, but I do welcome suggestions to other places if they have computers fitting what i need.)

Re: Looking to buy a good laptop

Not really, if you're dead set on it running Crysis.
