I want to buy a laptop but is it possible to get wifi in a house without a desktop computer.  If i go to college do i have to have a desktop computer with a wireless router to get wifi and if i don't whats the alternative

You can connect the wireless router to just a high speed connections without having a desktop. You will just need to connect the router to your notebook for initial setup, after that you will be wireless 100%.

To clarify, you'll need to connect an Ethernet cable from your laptop to the router for initial setup.

 

(This is for security reasons - allowing wireless configuration of a router is dangerous and hence most routers disable it by default, and I STRONGLY recommend not changing this!)
