Best Buy Webroot Anti Virus Disables Computer if you DO not PURCHASE

PLEASE BE WARNED - Webroot is anti-virus program that comes with every computer Best Buy sells, they get a cut from every subscription. If you do not subscribe to Webroot after free period it disables your computer. It locks "Task Master", locks "Remove Program" and disables your computer entirely. Geek Squad had to remove Webroot while in "Safe Mode" during startup. Best Buy Geek Squad did not want to admit and wanted me to PAY $300 to "remove virus". Angrily refused and demanded they remove Webroot which they did fearing a seen at the store. This corrected problem completely. This is how they continue to make money after you purchase laptop. 6 months later - THE SAME PROBLEM, Webroot Reinstalled itself and disabled my laptop because I did not purchase subscription. Went very ANGRY to Best Buy to the point of starting a seen, afraid of other customers having to see this, they removed Webroot again. The manager said "it must be another program doing this" and I said how can another company benefit from reinstalling Webroot and Subscription Pop-up. They had no response. Even Geek who helped me remove Webroot twice could not believe what Webroot does. I have not purchased another product from Best Buy since and probably never will BEWARE ---- I hear stories of other unwitting customers being charged $350 for "removing virus".

I'm sorry to state, you are completely incorrect. Webroot does not have this functionality.

And I'd like to know where the $350 came from..at most they should be charging you $280 to remove a virus.
I used to work for Best Buy as an Apple Specialist, but all my comments, posts and opinions are my own and do not in anyway reflect Best Buy. Mostly because I think the exact opposite as Best Buy anyway :smileytongue:

I am, by the way, not stating anything about employee actions, the situation, etc. Only that Webroot does not have that functionality - and webroot is *not* installed on all computers. Only in a percentage - as is Norton, etc. This is typically instaleld by the manufacturer, unless the computer is preloaded by GeekSquad.

Wow...how completely wrong you are.  I don't know how you came to such an erroneous idea, but you are completely, totally, 100% wrong.

You let the webroot expire, and something infected your computer.

You are better off without Webroot; it is not a very good product.  There are many other products available that are far better than webroot.

Once again, you are completely wrong in what you claimed.

I am not a fan of Webroot, nordo I now nor have I ever worked for Best Buy.

Re: Best Buy Webroot Anti Virus Disables Computer if you DO not PURCHASE

Completely 100% wrong. Whoever this person is either misheard every single thing they were told, or was exaggerating drastically.

1. NONE of the computers are pre-installed with Webroot by Best Buy - The ONLY time A/V software is ever pre-installed on machines is either A.) when the MFG has a trial of Norton installed or B.) you purchase the Geek Squad PC Setup, which includes the uninstall of any pre-existing a/v software and the addition of the a/v software of your choosing, from 4 different options.

2.Webroot does not have the functionality nor the ability to lock your system down just because you don't purchase it, or for any reason at all for that matter. It just can't do it. If your computer started locking down after your subscription ran out its probably because you consequently got a virus infection, and THAT can most certainly cause the machine to lock down.

3.Virus removal as well as several other beneficial services are included in Geek Squad's Tech Support plan, which starts at 1 year/3 computer term for 199.99, and only 99.99 with purchase of any new pc. Therefore its impossible that you or anyone else was charged or told they would be charged 300+ for virus removal. Even if your hard drive went bad and windows was destroyed, with Tech Support for 199.99 you'd only have to pay the cost of the new drive, so for STILL under 300.00 it would be installed and windows would be restored to have your pc back to like new.

4.The program that you saw reinstall itself and cause you issues both times was almost without a doubt a  "security virus", which makes itself look like an antivirus program, which could easily be mistaken as your own current software if you're not careful. Webroot could not and would not have reinstalled itself and caused issues.

5.The fact that you caused a scene both times doesnt mean you were right about what you thought, its just means they wanted to get you out of the store without having to call the police, so they probably actually removed VIRUSES from your computer, and got yelled at by you because YOU didnt renew your REAL antivirus software to begin with, and ended up with virus infections.

Re: Best Buy Webroot Anti Virus Disables Computer if you DO not PURCHASE

For my own part, I've stayed away from Norton products for many years now. I had a couple of bad experiences many years ago with Norton AV wiping the FAT tables on my C: disks when I tried to repartition drives.

Since 2005 I've been using AVG exclusively on all my computers and when I bought my new laptop at BB in January I made it a point to tell Geek Squad NOT to install Norton during PC setup because I was going to set up AVG. The pay edition has the most bells and whistles but it comes in a free edition which provides excellent basic security if you follow the instructions and practice safe computing/surfing.

[ Edited ]

I see this is an older post but I am in the same spot. I bought my computer 6 months ago and the webroot software has no easy way to remove it. {removed per forum guidelines}
