**I'm very much a tech dummy - trying to learn. Pls use small words and baby steps. TY very much**
Hello Friends,
I live out in the country -- only satellite tv and satellite internet reaches out here. For 2 years I had Dishnetwork and Wildblue -- with few issues aside from billing.
My contract is up....and I've signed on for Direct TV and Hughes Net internet with a local company setting this up. The company has told me my equipment, in this case means my 2 laptops (Toshiba 8 months old and my Dell Vostro 3700 which is new, both w/ Windows 7) will be fine with Hughes Net, Hughes Net's modem and they will work FINE/WELL with my older Netgear Router (WGR 614 with it's broken plastic piece for the antenna -- but the antenna wire is fine).
Hughes Net is supposed to have newer equipment and more satellites in the sky....newer technology, etc. It also takes (get this) 5-6 hours to install Hughes Net I was told more than once by the selling agent. (I don't know why)
The selling agent keeps saying this older router will work fine/well...and I hope it will. He said I won't have to buy or upgrade anything at all.
Does anybody have anything to say about this? I'd hate to get the installers here, in the morning (Saturday, I just found out(!) 8am, I JUST found out) and for them to say, "Hey lady, you can't use this old router".
Baby words folks....I'm still learning what all means insofar as computer lingo....and I sure appreciate any insight.
Blessings,
Doni

Baby words.
It connects the same. It will work.
The router doesn't care where the internet is coming from, what technology it uses, or if it's grape, cherry, or rasberry passion. Because the MODEM you have converts the internet to a readable form before it gets to the router or computer, it matters not.
Want proof? Think about it this way. If you didn't have a router you'd hook it directly into your computer's Ethernet port, right? With this new technology, would you have to buy a new Ethernet port? No.
Your router is the same.

LOL
Gladly - what's your pleasure and which BB store are you in? LOL If you're nearby (ya know out here in the sticks) - I'll bring you sweet treats (If you can now find the IP address of an email that I received from.......errr somebody, who knew what they were doing when sending this annon email -- I'll bring you a parade of food!). ![]()
The installer will be here in an hour -- time for me to hit the shower. (WHY it would take a minimum of 5 hours to install Hughes Net is beyond me)
Cheers,
Doni

I'd like a virtual fast food meal with virtual ketchup. Mmmm.
Or a virtual doughnut.
I work at bestbuy.com so you won't find me in a store. If you tried to enter our call center, security would be more then displeased.. assuming you could get past the series of magnetic doors. ![]()
In all serious, I hope everything works out when the installer comes - please update when it gets installed to verify everything works!

Side note and seperate post:
While your old router can and will work in this situation, there are newer more updated routers that will allow faster WIRELESS speeds to your devices. The formats are: B, G, and N. (and their + versions). This would not affect your wired connections. Your wireless devices are backwards compatible with routers and vice versa - so it's not as if compatibility is a factor in your decision.
If you have a B or G style router, consider saving up a little bit of money and getting an N style router sometime in the future. The N router is not entirely nessasary (it's a matter of fierce argument here on the boards), but as long as you're buying a new one, since you mentioned your old one only had a wire sticking out, might as well go for one like this:
NETGEAR - RangeMax Wireless-N 150 Router $54.99
