Hi bookywormp,
If you are just looking for basic functionality and email, I would recommend the Standard suite. The Home and Student suite does not include Outlook. To compare Office suites, visit http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/FX10163
Thanks for writing!

You didn't say if you were a college student or a high school student, but alot of Colleges and Universities have an agreement with Microsoft so you can get a copy for a very low price or for free.
I work for a university and I get all Microsoft software for free.
Check with your college bookstore and see if they have discounted versions of office.

You forgot about the Microsoft Office Ultimate Steal for college students
Good point, Microsoft student editions are HEAVILY discounted.
Not as well as some of the corporate "home use" discounts though. If you work for a large company you may have access to a "Home Use" discount program through your company - My copy of Office cost $10 through the Home Use Program.

My wife works for the college district down here and she had to pay a whole 10.00 for Office 2007 Pro and we got to load it on her laptop and my desktop. I just love those kind of deals. She is always doing stuff for them at home so they don't mind.
