Wireless speeds

Hello, I have one desktop running wireless on a bg adapter. My router is also bg. My desktop gets speeds of around 50kbs and it is on the floor above the one with the router. Would I get faster speeds if i switched the router to a n router? Is there anyway to improve my speed to close to a megabyte per second?

Re: Wireless speeds

It sounds more like you need to talk to your internet provider as 50kbps is slow molasses.

Re: Wireless speeds

Yes, I know. Un fortuantely our cable provider only gives us about a megabyte and a half per second, or thats what i get when i run the modem directly to a different computer. Our provider says high speed broadband, but i have gotten faster at motels. Any way, dealing with what i have now, what can i do about it without hardwiring it?

Re: Wireless speeds

Well, to be clear, are you meaning 1.5megaBIT?

1.5Mbit = 1536kilabits per seconds

There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide by 8 and you get 192kiloBYTES per second which is your internet speed. So if you're on 1.5mbit, that's the fastest you're going to get.

Re: Wireless speeds

Well the easiest way to see if it's your WiFi is to move the desktop closer to is and see if speeds increase, if they do, then look for a higher power router. If not, I'd take the beef up with your ISP.
