Wired Network to Wireless

I have 2 desktops and a printer connected to a hard wired router. What is the best and cheapest way to convert to wireless?

Do I need a wireless router or is there an adapter to change to wireless?

Thank you!

Re: Wired Network to Wireless

  • Your computers will need either a network card or a USB wifi transceiver.
  • Your printer will work best if you get a router that can make it a network printer
  • what internet modem do you have?  Some models already have wifi capabilities that just needs to be turned on

Don't forget about wireless security!  The last thing you need to be known for is offering free adult content in the neighborhood.

  • WPA2 encryption
  • Disable SSID broacast
  • MAC filtering

Re: Wired Network to Wireless

You can buy either a wireless bridge, or a wireless router and set it to bridge mode.  Or, you could replace your wired router with a wireless one, as they all have at least 4 wired ports on the back.

Re: Wired Network to Wireless

You'll need two wireless adapters (one for each desktop). You can connect them in "ad-hoc" mode so they talk to each other. Assuming the printer is already connected to one of the two, you would then just share it so the other can print.

That's the cheapest way. Keep in mind, the computer connected to the printer will need to be on for the second computer to print.

Does your printer have built-in wireless? Do they make wireless adapters for your printer? Or does it have to be connected to a computer? If it has to be connected to the computer, then regardless of what you do, that computer will have to be on in order to print.

If the printer is already wireless, just pick up a wireless router and two adapters for your desktops. Plug it all in, configure appropriately, and off you go.

Configure appropriately as in: change the admin password and configure WPA2 with a strong password. You can disable SSID broadcast and use MAC filtering if you want (as the post above suggests) but both are fairly useless and just make adding devices more of a pain.
