I am going to put windows 7 home premium upgrade on my pc and I am running vista home premium.
My question is can I do a clean install using the upgrade version of 7?
This is what I want to do since the upgrade is cheaper and I don't want to keep any thing from vista after I backup what I do want to keep.

Yes this is possible as far as I am aware. You need to boot from the Upgrade DVD and type in your product key when everything has finished installing and the desktop loads but not during installation. The reason this works is that Vista users can perform an in-place upgrade to Windows 7 whilst Windows XP users cannot. For this reason the installation media is somewhat flexible with regards to as and when it will activate. So long as you previously had a Microsoft operating system installed you should have no problems, and for most people this is the case. Remember that the family pack is not that much more expensive and probably deserves a look at as well depending upon your requirements.

Windows XP is still the best for me.
Vista has a very beautiful features, but in terms of capacity, Xp is much faster than vista, and so with windows 7,it just looked so cool, but it takes a lot of time to load

Yep just boot from the install dvd and choose "custom" then follow the directions.
Also if you had vista or the windows 7 release client it will save a copy of your old windows files. It will be called "windows old" Remeber to delete these files once you are sure you have saved everything you want. Otherwise it will just hog up hard drive space.
Subzero, what do you mean by loads slow? You mean it takes a long time for the OS to install or it takes a long time for it to boot up?
On the computers I have put windows 7 on it took no longer than the xp disk did. And as far as booting my system boot up faster with windows 7. And if you use the advanced hibernation it boots up very quickly and boots up to exactly how you left it, open windows and programs running and all that!
To my knowledge the family packs are gone, it was a limited time offer with only so many packs sent. If you can find one somewhere I think they doubled the price on them. I was lucky enough to get one of the last ones in my area.

I disagree with subzerorepair. He must be using Vista on an older machine because Vista's speed has been just fine for me, and Windows 7 was just as fast as XP. In fact, it actually does some stuff faster than XP like flash drive ejecting and the mini-mode for Windows Media Player. The conveniences like Aero-Snap also make me never want to go back to an older version of Windows again.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I installed 7 and have been very satisfied so far. I was running vista and mine is an older pc with pentium4/ 3.0 processor 160 gig hard drive with 2 -1/2 gig of ram and Vista ran ok but I can say for sure 7 seems to be smoother and faster for my system.
I can't see ever going back but one thing for sure if I do it will be back to xp. I still kind of miss it but I guess it's just what you get use to.
7 is fine and it like any thing else you just have to get use to the changes and the looks alone are great.

Don't worry, that user is simply a spam bot. That wasn't an actual reply by them. There was originally a link to their repair company within that post.

i personally dont like "upgrading" as you put it, i would just copy all of my personal files to a USB or disc or whatever. and just do a clean wipe and format, and fresh install. then copy files from USB or disk to computer to new windows.

Vista can be a resource pig but if you use msconfig and clean out your startup menu and buy a flash drive with ready boost vista will fly also maintenance inheritance will make any computer run better

Yes but windows 7 will work better without touching it. I had windows vista basic that was configured with only what I needed running and 4 gigs of ready boost. Windows 7 runs better without touching any services.
