I've just done a couple of trade-ins myself. From what I can find online, Best Buy was (suprisingly) giving the best value for my trade-ins without going to sell it privately. Don't expect much to help pay for a new computer though. I just traded in a pretty beefy machine last month (original core i7 processor, 8GB DDR3 memory, dual nvidia 8800gts 512MB graphics cards, 1TB+ hard drives (total between 2), and only got about $225 for it, whereas I spent about 5x that on it all 3 years ago.
Most stuff you should be able to take it directly into a store Geek Squad center and walk away with a gift card with the value on it.

While that may be true, doesn't mean you can't get credit for them. I built my machine that I referenced above 3 years ago, and still got a couple of hundred back from Best Buy's trade in.

How old is the computer? What's wrong with it?
If the hard drive still works, I keep it and use it. If you find it slow, install Ubuntu (Linix) on it.
