Running 32-bit app on 64-bit

I just bought a new laptop that has vista 64-bit edition. I use VPN client to work from home often and was hoping someone might be able to help. I understand that's there isn't a VPN client to run on a 64-bit computer and the one that I currently use only works on a 32-bit OS but I was hoping there might be some way to get my VPN client to work on this 64-bit laptop. Any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

Re: Running 32-bit app on 64-bit

Welcome vani!

Have you actually tried installing the VPN client on the 64-Bit laptop?  In theory, most software developed for 32-Bit Vista should install and run fine on an installation of 64-Bit Vista.  However, applications specifically developed for 64-Bit Vista will not work on an installation of 32-Bit Vista.

Hope this helps.  Thank you for posting.

Re: Running 32-bit app on 64-bit

The most obvious things that wont run on Windows Vista 64 are screensavers desgined for the 32bit platform.

(Yes, this means those that buy Marine Aquarium are going to be dissapointed it dont run on 64 bit :smileysad:  )

Re: Running 32-bit app on 64-bit

Hi Jacob,

I've tried installing the VPN client on my 64-bit laptop but when its comes to the end of the installation I get an error that says "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run." and it just rolls back the action. The VPN client I'm trying to install on the laptop is Cisco Home VPN Client 5.0.01.0600 which is the same client I was able to successfully install on my desktop which is a 32-bit.

Re: Running 32-bit app on 64-bit

This has been an ongoing problem for users of VPN Client Version 5, and here's Cisco's answer from their support site:

Cisco VPN Client Version 5 is available for 32-bit Windows Vista. There are no current plans to provide 64-bit support for the Cisco VPN Client, but 64-bit support is available for the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client. This client and release notes can be obtained from the software support site but you have to be a  registered user of AnyConnect VPN Client.

Hope the information helps!

Re: Running 32-bit app on 64-bit

Hello again Vani,

What AJ87 said is correct.  Cisco is not supporting 64-bit for that particular product.  After looking into this a little more, I see that there are a few third party clients available that support Cisco IPSec.  One of them is made by NCP Network Communications and is called NCP Secure Entry Client.  There is also an open source solution called VPNC Front End which utilizes OpenVPN.  Please know that I have personally not used these solutions.

Upgrading to Cisco's AnyConnect VPN Client is not just a software purchase.  It would require your company to physically purchase new Cisco hardware as well.

Hope you find a solution that works for you.

This information is incorrect.

#2bit screensavers .. ESPECIALLY marine Aquarium do in fact run on vista 64 bit .. I can send you a video of me showing you that I have vista 64 bit and actually executing the marine aquarium screensaver if you like? and also other 32 bit screensavers ...
