If you need to be very portable, get a 2.5". Otherwise, you have to carry an AC adapter around. I have both, and the 2.5" is a lot easier to travel with.
Is there any reason you want a Seagate? I've always gone with WD. My current system drive is a Seagate, but the heads are loud. Not sure if it's a defect, but it's annoying. I got it because WD no longer offered five year warranties on their drives, but Seagate does/did.

Seagate used to be the top dog in quality, but they've gone downhill over the past 2-3 years. WD is on top right now.
Seagate and WD both make 3.5" drives up to at least 1.5TB, possibly 2 by now, and both offer these in external enclosures.
As mentioned before. 3.5" drives absolutely require an AC adapter to use the drive, but are cheaper per gigabyte of storage and faster (especially an eSATA drive).
2.5" drives usually can be powered from the USB bus, but are approximately twice as expensive per gigabyte and slower. eSATA 2.5" enclosures exist, but these lose the main advantage of 2.5" drives as eSATA doesn't supply power.

if you'll be traveling often, a 2.5" drive is the way to go simply for convenience-sake; it's smaller and doesn't require an AC adapter. brand wise, i've seen both western digital models and seagate models, but i don't have a true opionion on brand.
if the drive will be stationary more often than not, the best price/gb would be in the 3.5" category. as nokia mentioned, at with the seagate internal drives, the four that i have in my desktop are relatively loud compared to other drives that i've had in the past. my parents and a roommate of mine has a western digital 3.5" external drive, and they have all been nothing but pleased.

I have both sizes. The bigger 3.5s should stay home as a big backup while the 2.5 can be carried around all the time. I have dropped my WD 2.5 5xs and each time it has turned on spooled up and functioned properly. My advice is to get a hard drive case which I just did. My 500gb portable is very slim and easy to take around. But the 3.5 is a major hassle because of its much larger size and carrying its power adapter means you have to find an outlet to run both it and the pc.
Get both heheh and use the smaller one as your main while the bigger one will be a back up if you accidentaly break the smaller one while on the go.
