Hello, new to this forum *waves.*  I need some assistance in picking out a laptop.  I want to make sure I get a decent one this time.  Seems I keep pickig bad ones and end up regretting it later.

I have had mainly Toshibas.  Big fan up until this past year when three out of five I have owned have had issues with hardrives, as in replacing them.  Had a HP but it had a lot of fan noise and tended to get hot rather fast.  I was looking at ASUS and so far have heard good things. 

Mainly what I use the computer is for.... pictures, photo editing (I use a tablet, etc), writing, watching movies... that's about it.  I was wanting something that stays cool, has hardly any fan noise, and isn't bulky.  

Any ideas?

I am using Sony laptop since last year and its working fine, owning one of HP's also never had any fan noise issue like you mentioned.....You can try Sony Vaio series and can check Dell as well because compatibility wise Dell is best.

Biggest question is, what's your budget? If you're doing any sort of graphical editing, I usually lean towards recommending Apple.

I would argue the recommendation for Sony.  Their computers are poorly designed, and to cut corners Sony has turned to using inferior parts.  They are an absolute nighmare to work on, and their customer service is almost as bad as their laptops.

I am also curious as to what is the "compatibility" that Dell has supposedly over other brands.  Compatiblity with what?

You mentioned that you are looking for something without bulk or noise and that you were considering an ASUS.  Not knowing your budget yet, I'm going to offer two suggestions:

1. Take a look at Ultrabooks at www.BestBuy.com/Ultrabooks. Ultrabooks are designed to be thin and responsive.  One thing to note since you are going to use it for pictures and photo editing, many Ultrabooks have Solid State Drives, which have speed/performance advantages, but typically come in smaller capacities.  If you are storing thousands of high-res photos locally, you might miss the capacity and be willing to carry around more bulk.  However, it sounds like you edit photos on a tablet, so the speed/responsive over local capacity tradeoff could work well for you.
