PSP - Laptop Replacement

I just had my beloved G1S-X1 ASUS laptop declared unrepairable by Geeksquad and thus, up for "junk out." I have been without a usable laptop for almost 3 weeks. I used it primarily for rendering with photoshop and other computer graphic programs for work and school projects but don’t have a suitable replacement. I was disappointed when I was told they wouldn’t be able to return my laptop to working order but somewhat optimistic I would get something better. Unfortunately, I have been offered only models that don't meet the specifications I need, which is everything that came with it. I bought my laptop as an investment with all the features carefully chosen and paid a lot for it, $1799, 3 years ago. Most of the specifications are obvious going to be better today like the RAM and Harddrive but they have failed to match the Resolution and GMU (Graphics Card). I suggested an ASUS G73JH for $1299, that meets my main concerns but they turned it down, even though it’s worth less than my original purchase price. The Terms & Conditions of my PSP state: “… replaced with a new or rebuilt comparable product that meets the manufacturer’s specifications of the original product, or you will receive a reimbursement in an amount equal to the original product’s purchase price.” Still, they refuse to replace my laptop with a match like the one I suggested or provide credit for one of my choice. What am I supposed to do?

Re: PSP - Laptop Replacement

You paid $1799 three years ago. With depreciation and normal wear and tear, your computer is worth less than $800 dollars today. You would be lucky to get a laptop in the $800 dollar range for your old one. No one will give you what you paid for your three year old computer.

Re: PSP - Laptop Replacement

Well, as he quoted, they're supposed to match specifications.  If they're not matching screen resolution and GPU performance, they're not honoring the terms of the plan.

Re: PSP - Laptop Replacement

I am going by what is written in my plan, that is the legal contract I entered into with BestBuy, paid for and signed. Nowhere in my paperwork does it mention they will not refund my entire original value but they do mention that they will not exceed the original purchase price. So, I am literally looking for a laptop valued up to $1759.99 and not a penny more. But if it is refunded in credit, it will be not a penny less. My laptop was an awesome computer that had everything I needed and BestBuy happened to carry yet I can't find nor do I accept the ridiculous offers that BestBuy so far has given me. I would appreciate someone suggesting a model that meets my specifications since BestBuy does'nt care to?

Good luck with that! No where in your written contract do they say that they will refund your full purchase price. That sword cuts both ways. I sincerely hope that it works out in your favor, but again i stress that your expectations are unrealistic.

Re: PSP - Laptop Replacement

I am mostly just hoping to get the best match of all my specifications overall, I am not being unrealistic. My paperwork does in fact say they will refund the total original purchase price. "...in an amount equal to the original purchase price.”

That is only in the case if the store cannot find a comparable replacement. I've only seen such an instance involving the replcement of CRT TVs where there is a vast difference in technology between yesterday's CRT tube TVs and today's LCD TVs. When it comes to computers, it's usually very easy because anything half-decent today is an upgrade compared to the top of the line model from 3 years ago. When considering comparable tech specs, Best Buy does not get into the nitty gritty details such as manufacturer marketing addons (e.g. Sony's ultra LCD screens, Toshiba's Super MultiDrive, HP's MediaSmart, etc.). Traditionally, the processor, memory, hard drive, screen size, and sometimes graphics chip are looked at.

I DO NOT work for Best Buy. Whatever I post are just educated guesses or common sense.

Agreed. The OP does not seem to realize that he will get a faster/better processor, and faster RAM, and most likely a larger hard drive compared to his old unit. The cost of the new unit will be significantly *LESS* than the $1700 he paid, yet will have better/faster/more modern components.

Re: PSP - Laptop Replacement

I used to have that line of laptop, the 17" version, and I can't remember the model. Anyway, as the others have said, if you're getting a newer computer, it's going to outperform your old one.

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

The problem is that for a gaming machine, a faster/better processor crippled by a deficient graphics chipset with reduced display resolution is worthless.

The most critical specs for a gaming laptop are display resolution and graphics chipset.
