PCIE and 250watt power supply

I have a Compaq Presario SR1710NX desk top with a 250watt power supply. The desktop has 1

PCIE slot and 3 PCI slots. Can I upgrade safely to a video card requiring 300watt power supply in

the PCIE slot? Maybe a 512mb card?

Your pc has 1 PCI-E 16X slot.

If you go with anything higher than a Nvidia 8600GT then you will need a new powersupply.
