Why  would my new HP PC purchased in March from Best Buy have a warning pop up that I am not using Genuine Windows????

You have to install the Genuine Windows Validation tool to get a lot of Microsoft updates these days. The pop-up doesn't mean you aren't using a legit copy, it just means you need to validate/register it through the Microsoft website.

Re: Not Genuine Windows

I did that and it still says it is not genuine.  I've been emailing Microsoft and their answers are not helping either.

Also, my key on the label on the PC is not the same as the key that is shown in the PC if that makes sense.  I guess they say HP and/or Best Buy does that when they have a lot of computers to license?

Re: Not Genuine Windows

Was this a sealed unit, or was it open box?

Re: Not Genuine Windows

I found this on another forum regarding the same issue: --------------------------BEGIN PASTE---------------------------------------------- It appears that Windows7's Licensing Store may have become corrupt or somehow, unreadable. Please try the below steps to recreate the Store. 1) Click the Start button 2) Type: CMD.exe in the start search field 3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator 4) Type: net stop sppsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes) 5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform 6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar 7) Type: slui 8) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You likely be asked to re-enter your product key and/or re-activate. Please tell us how this worked for you, Darin MS -----------------------------END PASTE----------------------------------------------------------------------- Let us know if this helps.

Re: Not Genuine Windows

When I do rename tokens.dat tokens.bar, it says a duplicate file name exists or that file can not be found.

by the way, to start the procedure you have to type start sppsvc

Re: Not Genuine Windows

You can rename it to tokens.bax or tokens.old...whatever you want. The idea is to rename it so that it has to be re-created on the next boot. You may have to do it in safe mode. As stated, the solution I posted was one I found on another forum...so if there is a mistake in the commands, it is not my fault. I used cut and paste to copy it into the post.

Re: Not Genuine Windows

OK I did that and it does not ask me for my key, it said it was successful.
