NEED HELP VIDEO EDITING DESKTOP

So i'm finally breaking down and buying a new desktop to do video editing with.  I was wondering what would be a good buy from best buy under $1000.  Any suggestions.  Needs to have Firewire port.  at least 6GB Ram and 1TB of harddrive space.  blu-ray dvd-rom would be great.  but not a necessity.

Premiere elements or pro? Will you be using ae, photoshop, illustrator, combustion, flash, maya, lightwave, soundbooth, sound forge, acid, anything besides premiere? If you are looking only at premiere or avid, the most you need is a good processor, fast drive(ssd maybe?), and good speed of ram. But if you are hoping to take advantage of adobes new graphics acceleration, you might want to look into a gpu like the gtx285 or one of their supported workstation cards.

Also, I have never really found avid to compete with premiere pro, vegas pro, and final cut pro. It doesn't have as fluent of an interface as some of the others and final cut and premiere have much faster render engines. Just sayin.

Firewire?  Blu-Ray?

If you're doing high def work and haven't bought the camcorder yet, avoid tape-based these days.  Get a flash memory based camcorder.  (no need for Firewire any more).

Re: NEED HELP VIDEO EDITING DESKTOP

Well, actually there is a use for firewire. Firewire cameras typically can stream straight to the computer or recording device. If you are working with premiere pro you obviously have onlocatoin, an incredibly handy tool for recording with firewire cameras. Both sony and canon have incredibly good lines of cameras. Another recording type is p2 cards(yes they are flash based). The main reason for their use is because of the incredibly high write and read speeds along with the amount of times they can be rewritten. They cost around 500 though. The cameras are also more expensive.
