Yep, if it was XP and a Dell, you (or whoever the original owner was) got recovery discs with the unit, that is their charge for the discs and shipping usually, as you were unable to retain the ones given with the unit.

You are lucky to have it for 18.00 only....some companies charges much more.

Hello CrimsonRain,
It appears that your information about the cost of recovery disks for HP consumer computers needs updating. I am not aware that they cost from $50-$80. They tend to run in the same range given by mzconfigure.

Regards,
I believe you may have misread my post. I stated that Sony charges $50-$80 for their recovery media. I also stated that HP and Acer/Gateway/eMachines usually purge their database from which they store recovery disc images of older models. I've usually experienced this when it comes to models that run Windows XP such as for the HP Pavilion a600n. Aside from that, I've usually had good experiences when it comes to ordering recovery media from HP during my time with Best Buy/Geek Squad. I've had cases where HP would send them to my clients free of charge and other times for ~$16.

Or you could get a friend that is computer knowledgeable that can get you a Linux OS distro CD for free and not have to use MacroShaft.

Hello Crimson Rain,
Thanks very much for the clarification and for the positive feedback. Yes, I have seen the HP cds cost as low as $16 and if the ones made from the special partition do not work and given other special circumstances, often Tech Support and other teams will send a free replacement copy.
Thanks again,
