Acer owns gateway.
I do not believe in brand loyalty when it comes to laptops. There is only a handful of competing companies that make them and they all have quality products that use essentially the same pool of parts in similar variations.
As far as desktops go, I have not bought a pre-built system since the 90s, but I imagine that they are much the same. However, because desktops can be purchased part-by-part, large online computer part shops like N.Egg and Directron, sell systems that far exceed store-bought OEM system's in price and performance; and use more unique enthusiast brand parts not found in your typical desktop (Basically a custom PC).

In general, in terms of brands:
Anything > HP
Asus > Gateway (by a little bit, not by much)
It really depends on which manufacturer has the best features for you in your price range. Asus has a LOT of good models, but there are some holes in their model ranges that are better covered by other manufacturers.
In my case, I have an Asus G51vx-X2A and an Asus Eee 1000HE - both are excellent units. The G51 is incredibly powerful, but heavy, hot, and has short battery life. The Eee is sloooow, but it is small, runs cool, and the battery lasts forever.

Toshibas are pretty good.
If you're not doing heavy 3D work, you probably just want to find a system with:
Reasonably fast CPU
Plenty of RAM (4GB or more)
A good display (For photo editing work I STRONGLY reccommend a display capable of 1080p, frequently shown on specs as 1920x1080, or greater.)
I would NOT reccommend doing photo/graphic design work on a 1366x768 display (most low-end and mid-grade laptops and nearly everything BB sells - In fact the BB versions of many models are the ONLY ones that are 1366x768, such as the Asus G51vx-RBBX05 vs. all other G51vx variants)
