Hooking up my laptop to my tv ??? HELP

I'm trying to hook up my laptop to my tv but am having some problems. I bought a 6' VGA PC Monitor Replacement Cable. I put it into the computer and the tv but the tv says that the inout is empty. is there a setting i have to change on the tv or laptop? I NEED SOME HELP

ok now i got the input to show up but there is no picture. Just black screen.

Make sure the computer is outputting video through the VGA port. You usually have to set this.

It's different for any given laptop.  It also tends to differ between video cards.  Each manufacturer of video chipsets has their own way of doing things.

 

I suggest digging through manuals or googling for your laptop's model and "external monitor".

 

I am *assuming* you are talking about a newer TV with VGA or HDMI inputs based on the cabling you described.

Then ensure the TV's input or "source" is your VGA input.  You may also need to output sound from the computer to your stereo system or TV via a headphone jack RCA "Y" cable.
