If you mean computer modems which allows your computer to interpret internet signals, just buy a new 56k modem and install it. They also have external ones but I have no experience with them.
As for high speed internet, you have to have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as Cox Cable or AT&T DSL. They require a modem connected to either the phone line or co-axial cable like the ones below.
If DSL, get Motorola - Netopia.
If Cable, get Motorola - SURFboard.
You can connect directly to your computer if you have one computer. For more than one computer, you will need a router which disperses the signal to 4 hard-wired computers and quite a few wireless devices.
The two modems above are pretty much standards also. The Cable one will work with all cable companies and the DSL one will work with all DSL companies. The modems with a built in router tend to break more easily and only have G strength so the coverge is roughly 500-800 sq. ft. and has a maximum bandwidth of 54 Mbps. I highly do not recommend them.
If you are having problems with a modem communicating to your computer or router, you can do what is called a power cycle. First turn off your computer. Disconnect the ethernet cable on the back of your computer. Then unplug the power source to the router and do the same for the modem. Wait 10-15 minutes and then reconnect the power to the modem. Once 2 minutes has passed, connect the power to the router and wait for the little guy to finish starting up. Lastly reconnect the ethernet to your computer and turn it on. This is usually a fail safe and will reset your router and modem so they can communicate better and gets your PC a new IP address thus resolving most connection issues.
Good luck, next tiem provide mor einformation please! ![]()
