Computer Upgrade Help

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my HP Pavilion Elite E9220y with a new graphics card and power supply to support it.

Right now I am planning to get the GeForce GTX 460 1GB as well as the Corsair 750W ATX CPU Power Supply.

I have a few questions regarding my upgrades.

1.) Will these parts fit into my HP Pavilion case?

2.) Should I be concerned with heat problems with the new graphics card and power supply? If so, what fan should I get that would work with my computer case?

3.) If I need to upgrade my computer case as well, does anyone have any recomendations?

Thank you very much. I am a novice when it comes to computer hardware so I really want to make sure I know what I am doing.

Re: Computer Upgrade Help

This depends. if you look at your graphics card slot and expandable slots, are they low profile or standard? These should work, but measure your psu and compare it to the specs of the future choice. There shouldn't be too much of a heating problem, but if there is one, you will either need to get a really good fan, or you will have to upgrade your case. As for case recommendations, I would choose between thermaltake, antec, or coolermaster. Look for at least mid size atx to full.

Re: Computer Upgrade Help

1) Maybe. Measure everything. A cursory glances makes the case they use for your HP Pavilion Elite E9220y look like a normal midsize ATX case. But HP often does funny crap in their cases.

2) Always be concerned about heat problems. There is a reason all the new video cards come with a slot cooler attached and take up two rows.

My advice, if the case has extra openings for fans buy them and hook them up. Fans are typically very cheap and can be found in the 80/90/120 mm sizes.

Try to have all the fans one side sucking it in and fans on an opposing side blowing it out. You want air to circulate and making your fans work against each other doesn't help.

Also make sure there is plenty of space BEHIND your computer in order to let the ambient room temperature cool that hot exhaust off.

3) As asandwhich said, Thermaltake, Antec, or Coolermaster all make nice cases. I prefer plain black aluminum Coolermasters with no lame blue lights. But it's up to you.

Oh and always Mid Size ATX cases or bigger (although I find the " ... or bigger" to be a really obnoxious size).

Good luck!

Lian Li manufactures top of the line case, however, Lian Lis are quite expensive.

Re: Computer Upgrade Help

While I hate the garbage out of that Spider case some of their cases look pretty darn good.

I think I'll purchase one to give it a whirl, swap the pieces out of one of my other machines. It will look good next to the TV. :smileyhappy:
